CYRIL NASH

16.04.10

We are very sorry to report that Cyril Nash, one of our old players, passed away last Tuesday, aged 79. Cyril joined the club around 1950 and he took over as first team goalkeeper at the start of the 1951/52 season when the legendary Alec Freeman moved abroad. Brave and reliable, Cyril gave many fine performances in the number one jersey and he actually played in every single one of the 40 games played by the first team in that 1951/52 season. The following campaign he made 42 out of a possible 46 appearances. After that, his appearances became less frequent as he lost his place to another Hamlet legend, Dave Darvill, but he went on to total 115 first team appearances, the last of which was in season 1960/61. An excellent clubman, he also played many games for the reserves over the years and when, in 2003, we started up our Vice-Presidents' Club for former Hamlet players, Cyril was one of the first to join. He was a regular visitor to the ground on our 'Vice-Presidents' Days' and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to discuss old times with his former teammates. A true gentleman, he was very popular and always good company. Sadly, his health had deteriorated in the past couple of years and he had not been able to visit us. We offer our sincere condolences to his wife, Sylvia, and the family at this sad time. Cyril's funeral is to be held on Wednesday 28th April at 11.15 am at Beckenham Crematorium.
