It was a cracking way to start the season last Saturday racing into a 5-0 lead by half-time and eventually running out winners against Maldon & Tiptree by six goals scored by five different players and without conceding.

There were some murmurings that the result was as much down to the opposition’s turbulent preparation for the new season as it was to our own performance so I think it is right to point out that the same players would go on to beat promotion favourites Aveley midweek. 

Our own midweek away day at Chatham Town would result in defeat, it’s a trip we have got little out of so far and we were well off the performance from a few days previously so we can’t have too many complaints and with only four clubs winning both their opening games it’s going to be competitive league. 

Thank you to all of you who turned out at Champion Hill and again at the Bauvill on Tuesday night, it was great to see and hear our fans and I hope the spark returns in what has become a fixture we all look out for on the calendar. They are rarely many goals in this game and Cheshunt have opened the season with two goalless draws but hopefully we can buck that trend and build on the positives from last Saturday. 

If the forecast is correct then we will be over the worst of the fifth heatwave in the past few months and it will be a fresher day on the terraces, I know it’s been a big ask since pre-season kicked off to watch football in these temperatures and it has reignited a lot of discussions about stadium design both now and for the future. We continue to improve the pitch and touch wood, the floodlight issue that burst into life against Dorking has also been resolved so we will keep fighting the good fight. 

I hope you enjoy today’s game and another more moderate crowd while the holidays are on which we know many of you prefer in terms of match day experience before the crowds return and I’d also like to take this opportunity to ask you to keep next Wednesday open when our U18s start their FA Youth Cup campaign at 7.45pm against Sevenoaks Town. Their title winning first season was an amazing achievement we have already seen some of the players step up into the first team squad so we can genuinely say it’s a chance to see a potential future Pink and Blue star.
