Rivals Face Replay After Deadlock At Dulwich
We hadn’t played our fierce rival since April 2018, but The Hamlet and The Tanners will now meet twice in the space of four days after playing out an entertaining 2-2 draw at Champion Hill in front of a crowd of 1,270. Two second-half strikes from Sebastian Karczewski looked to have sent Leatherhead through to the next round, but an equaliser from the outstanding Anthony Jeffrey in the 84th minute levelled the tie late on.
Hamlet captain Jerome Binnom-Williams was at the centre of the action in the first half. In the ninth minute, a blistering run from Jeffrey took three defenders out of the game, and a fourth took the winger out inside the box. Our last penalty had been missed by Luke Wanadio, so Binnom-Williams stepped up to take this one. Unfortunately for The Rabble massed behind the goal, he sent the resulting spot kick wide. Twenty-five minutes later he made amends and in some style. Receiving the ball 25 yards out, his first touch deceived the defender, he took one more before sending a fierce drive into the bottom right-hand corner of the net. Shortly before half-time Wanadio almost made it two, but he dragged his shot just wide with the keeper beaten.
We were good value for our lead at the break, but Leatherhead levelled six minutes into the second half when Karczewski bundled the ball home from close range after it had come back off the crossbar. Seventeen minutes later the striker doubled his tally, finishing from 18 yards after the Dulwich defence had misjudged a long ball over the top. Jeffrey was the outstanding player on the day and had the last word. A smart flick around the corner from Binnom-Williams found the pacy winger. His first touch wasn’t pure, but he drove infield and then unleashed a searing shot from 20-yards that beat the Leatherhead keeper for pace and power.
