REPORT | Dulwich Hamlet vs Lewes

  • Date: Thu 24th Mar 16
  • Venue: Champion Hill
  • Attendance: 2,973

Two first half goals gave Dulwich Hamlet their second 2-0 league victory of the season over the visiting Lewes FC, in front of 2,973 fans at Champion Hill.

The Hamlet made a lively start and were rewarded inside the opening two minutes. Ryley Scott won a corner, which Luke Wanadio took. His inswinging delivery was flicked on at the near post by Danny Mills, before cannoning off a Lewes defender and nestling in the far corner of the net.

For the next 35 minutes, Lewes had more of the ball and the better of the chances. Chris Whelpdale had already forced R’avan Constable into one good save, before missing an even better one. Played through by Luke Dreher, Whelpdale took a touch but skied his effort over the bar from inside the area.

In the 39th minute, Dulwich doubled their advantage. An effort from Wanadio was parried by Nathan Harvey, and debutant Roarie Deacon’s powerful follow-up was blocked and cleared for a throw-in. From that throw-in, Craig Braham-Barrett sent over a looping cross and Mills timed his jump perfectly to soar over Harvey and head home.

The second half of the game followed a similar pattern. Lewes were the more dynamic team, with Kalvin Lumbombo-Kalala looking particularly threatening down the Lewes left. However, it was Dulwich who came closest to changing the scoreboard, A counter-attack began with a Constable kick, one bounce later and it was at the feet of Wanadio inside the penalty area. He twisted one way and the other before flashing a shot just wide. And Harrison Hatfull, on for the injured Jerome Binnom-Williams, drove forward from halfway before unleashing a powerful drive that forced Harvey to dive low to his right to save.

Lewes came closest to reducing the arrears in the 75th minute when substitute Ola Ogunwamide curled just wide from the edge of the box.  The return of Sanchez Ming to Champion Hill largely passed without incident, although in the 83rd minute, he was involved in some afters with Mills which saw Arthur Penny cautioned for the away side, Mings had already been cautioned for dissent.

The final seven minutes and stoppage time passed without incident and The Hamlet move up to eighth place in the table, just three points off the playoffs.
