REPORT | Dulwich Hamlet vs Wingate & Finchley
Mills Rocks The Hill
A Danny Mills goal in the final minute of stoppage time meant The Hamlet edged a three-goal thriller, collecting all three points and lifting us to sixth in the table, level on 20 points with today’s opponents.
For the second Saturday in succession, we struck deep into added time. Luke Wanadio’s corner was cleared to the edge of the box, Louis Ramsay looped it back in, Mills outmuscled his marker and sent his looping header past ex-Hamlet stopper Charlie Grainger and into the back of the net. The goal sent The Rabble into rapture. The Hill was rocking and Danny Mills was the frontman whose tune the 2,750 fans were singing.
The two sides met on the opening day of the season, on that occasion Ogo Obi scored twice as Wingate won 3-2. He was at it again as he opened the scoring with a superb strike in the 17th minute. There appeared to be little danger when he picked the ball up some 35 yards from goal, but he cut in from the right before unleashing an unstoppable left-foot shot which arrowed into the top corner. It was a strike to file under ‘you don’t save those’.
We responded well, but our efforts on goal were either blocked or self-sabotaged as, despite good approach play, the final ball was often lacking. In the 56th minute, we finally found an equaliser. Following a corner the ball broke to Jerome Binnom-Williams just outside the area, the Hamlet captain, back in the side after returning from suspension, took one touch to compose himself and then finished low into the bottom left-hand corner.
Enter Mills, on as a 71st-minute substitute for his 201st Hamlet appearance. The striker has made a career out of scoring headed goals and his latest was one the most memorable he has scored in a Pink and Blue shirt.
We return to Champion Hill next Saturday as we host Potters Bar Town. You can get your tickets here.
