REPORT | Magical Hamlet Hammer Horsham
In front of a crowd of 2,919, our biggest of the season, we produced our best 90 minutes of the campaign so far, beating Horsham 5-2, a win which lifts the Pink and Blue firmly into the playoff picture.
Braces from Danny Mills, Luke Wanadio, and a first goal in a Hamlet shirt for Louis Ramsay, secured a third league victory in a row.
It didn’t take us long to take the lead. In the sixth minute, Mills opened the scoring, finishing from close range with his left foot from a low Anthony Jeffrey cross.
Twelve minutes later we doubled our advantage. Horsham centre-back Jack Strange misjudged a high through ball and Mills beat the onrushing Lewis Carey to the bouncing ball, lobbing the Horsham keeper with his right foot from just outside of the area.
The centre-forward, who was wearing a headband due to the injury he sustained against Canvey Island, should’ve had a perfect hat-trick inside 20 minutes. However, his header, from a Ramsay cross, cannoned back off the bar with the keeper beaten. We would make it three before the break, with Ramsay volleying home from a tight angle with the help of a deflection off Strange. It looked like an own goal but will go down as Ramsay’s first for the club.
The away side made three changes at half-time and two of the substitutes, Chris Dickson and Ola Ogunwamide, made an instant impact. They combined in the 47th minute to give the latter a tap-in from 12 yards out.
In the 52nd minute, Wanadio scored the best goal of the game. It was pure magic from The Wizard, as he waltzed past four defenders before rifling an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net. In the 68th minute Ogunwamide squeezed a near post volley past Dillon Barnes to reduce the arrears, but a neat side-foot finish from Wanadio, his eighth league goal of the season, eased any Hamlet nerves and we ran out deserved winners in the September sunshine.
