REPORT | Hamlet and Hawks Share Six In The Sunshine
A crowd of over 1,400 witnessed a six-goal thriller in the August sunshine at Champion Hill. The away side started the better and took a deserved lead in the 15th minute. Substitute Imran Kayani thought he’d scored with his first touch, but Charlie Lambert’s close-range shot, which went in via the post, was adjudged to have already crossed the line. Immediately after that goal, Sam German had to be substituted. Hopefully, his injury won’t keep him out for long.
We slowly grew into the game and in the 24th minute, the outstanding Anthony Jeffrey was fouled inside the box by Rhys Wyborn. Hamlet’s top scorer Luke Wanadio was the man on the spot for the third match running, but he squandered the chance to equalise, sending the spot kick over the bar. We were on top now, and in the 31st minute, Danny Mills scored his 200th competitive goal. It’ll come as no surprise to learn it was a header, as he jumped highest to head home Wanadio’s looping cross. Five minutes after half-time another Mills header, this time from a Jeffrey cross, gave us a 2-1 advantage.
We didn’t hold onto it for long, a poor backpass from Ralfi Hand gifted Hawks skipper Charlie Walker the chance to equalise. Clean through on goal he made no mistake, with his well-taken finish giving Dillon Barnes no chance. In the 77th minute, the lead changed hands again. A smartly taken goal from Emmanuel Mensah, who finished from just outside the area, looked like it would give Whitehawk their first win of the season.
However, we weren’t done yet and Wanadio atoned for his earlier penalty miss by notching his fourth of the season with just six minutes remaining. AJ was the creator, AJ, he faked to go outside but cut inside, taking multiple defenders out of the game, before rolling the ball to Wanadio. The Wizard took one touch to control and then hit it hard and low across the keeper into the bottom left corner from 20 yards out. Both sides had chances to win the game, but good saves from Barnes and Joshua Strizovic meant the game ended all square.
