TEAM TALK | Anthony Jeffrey

NAME ANTHONY JEFFREY

SHIRT NO. 11

POSITION WINGER/FORWARD

Team you support and your childhood footballing hero?

I’m an Arsenal supporter and my favourite player as a kid was Thierry Henry. Growing up, my hero was probably my older brother Marcus Jeffrey… although he doesn’t play for anyone.

When did you first visit Champion Hill?

When I was signed three years ago.

How did you come to join?

I was supposed to sign for Dulwich four seasons earlier. But the timing wasn’t right. I was finally signed by Hak back in 2023. The rest is history...

Where do you play?

I can play on the left or right wing but I can also play up front or even at right-back – no one is beating me one versus one... (laughs)

What other Senior clubs have you played for previously?

I was at Arsenal rom the age of 8 to about 21. Since then I’ve spent time at Stevenage Wrexham, Forest Green Rovers, Dover Athletic, Billericay Town, Wycombe Wanderers, Sutton United
and Boreham Wood.

Any trophies in the cabinet?

I’ve been involved in two promotions… and have also been a winner at Wembley! We got promoted there when I was with Forest Green Rovers winning the play-off final 3-1. Elsewhere I’ve won promotion to League 2 and League 1. Nothing will be better than winning promotion with Dulwich though.

Best player you've ever played alongside and why?

The German forward Serge Gnabry was an absolute freak of nature when we crossed paths at Arsenal. He was just good at everything and was a level above the rest of us. He was my team mate – we were in the same age group.

Toughest Opponent?

Manchester City's Nathan Ake when he was a youngster playing for Chelsea and I was playing for Arsenal. He was very quick, very strong and intelligent. He had already played in the Champions League by that age...

Best moment in football?

Playing for my national team Guyana and making history by becoming the country's first 16 to qualify for a major tournament – the 2019 Gold Cup. We played a USA side featuring Christian Pulisic and Juventus' Western McKennie in the first game. I came on as a 73rd minute substitute.

Best goal you've ever scored?

A league match for Dover against Wrexham. I dribbled past three players and put it in the top corner. The goal was so good Wrexham signed me the next season. (laughs)

Best moment at Hamlet?

A last minute winner against Cray Wanderers in front of my family early last season.

Hopes for this season?

Promotion/ By any means.

Favourite other sports?

Athletics and Boxing.

If you could change one rule in the game, what would it be?

I’d make it OK to argue with referees because 'What do you mean, they can make mistakes and I can’t say what I like!?' (smiles)
