An almost forgotten Hamlet hero recalled
There was some surprised looks from fans when Hussein Hegazi featured in the recently unveiled Dulwich Hamlet Black History photo exhibition
The Black History Month display was unveiled by First Team manager Gavin Rose, prior to the recent VCD Athletic match on 3rd October.
Hegazi was a pre-First World War Hamlet star, who was, and still is, a national hero in his home country of Egypt.
He would still be totally unknown to the current Hamlet faithful, if Dulwich fan Jack McInroy, who designed and curated the exhibition that was jointly funded by the Dulwich Hamlet Football Committee & the Supporters Trust, had not carried out many, many hours of painstaking detective work into his life a few years ago.
Today the story of Hegazi was featured in the 'Southwark News', in their weekly local history page, and they reproduced it on their website. Just CLICK HERE to see what they had to say about the great man, as well as 'Our Jack'!
Jack McInroy, affectionately known as 'Jack the Plaque' to his closest Hamlet terrace mates after leading the campaign in the Nineties, to get a Southwark Council Blue Plaque awarded in honour of Edgar Kail, is the editor of the on-going occasional magazine that celebrates our great past called the 'Hamlet Historian'. He also has a blog of the same name, where he reproduces many of the past articles that have appeared in previous issues.
