An occasional visitor to Champion Hill travels a long way
His name is Dave Fry, & he likes to take photos when he does. We had a brief chat with him after the Lowestoft game
You're one of our longer distance fans. Where have you travelled from & how many games do you get to?
"I live in Liverpool. The amount of games I go to varies. Last season, despite Dulwich doing so well, I only got to three or four. But some years I can reach double figures."
So how did you get into Dulwich Hamlet?
"My main team are Prescot Cables, who I started watching when I first went to Liverpool, to go to university there. I'm originally from the East Grinstead area. I got into The Hamlet when another Dulwich fan, Roger Deason, who was also at uni with me, moved to South London, and started supporting The Hamlet. Not a Champion Hill though, his first year was the groundshare, in the promotion season, 1991/92, when we played our home games at Sandy Lane, the old ground of Tooting & Mitcham United, when the current ground was being built. So he's to blame for me being here!"
So in Liverpool you support Precot Cables. What level are they and how does it compare to Isthmian League football?
"We play in the Northern Premier League First Division North, which is called the Evo-Stik League. It's the equivalent of the Ryman One North & South divisions. In terms of comparisons, we were promoted a few seasons ago, in 2003/4, as part of the re-organisations, the year Dulwich lost to Wealdstone in that one-off play-off match; & stayed up there for four seasons, but to be honest nowadays we're probably most seasons competing to avoid relegation. League wise I'd say the standard is fairly similar. Club wise we'd be someone like Chipstead, trying to stay away from the drop door, if you wanted to make a sort of comparison."
You always have a camera with you and take decent snaps of our games, when you're wathcin us. What's the appeal of your hobby, and tell us about your blog.
" It basically started by taking a couple of Prescot photos, to illustrate the games I'd been to. I started on Precot as they were my main team, and built up the skills from there. The blog was something I began a couple of years ago, the idea was to offer photographic hints and tips, but there's a limit on how much you can do that, so I started concentrating a bit more on the days out and non-league games."
How has Dulwich changed since you started following The Hamlet?
"It's changed a heck of a lot, not just Dulwich, but the standard of the non-league game at our levels is a lot higher. There's a much more professional outlook, as in fitness and training, epitomised by up and coming talented managers like Gavin Rose. From a Dulwich point of view the current team is the best I've seen, not just because of winning the title, but in terms of the football played under Gavin since he's been at Champion Hill."
What have been your stand out moments been supporting Dulwich?
"Undoubtedly both promotions. The first one at Hitchin, when John Egan put the ball in the Hitchin net, when you lost your winning golden goal ticket!
(Interviewers note: It was in my hand, but fluttered up in the air when we scored, to fall between their wooden slatted terace. I told Irvin, from their club shop, who knew me well, & when it wasn't claimed he kindly paid out in good faith!)
Last season's title win, it was simply one of those days when you just had to be there. Some of the times being a Hamlet supporter just having fun have been great, but one in particular that stands out, was from the '92 promotion run in, away to Maidenhead United. When we scored Richard Watts picked up one of their dustbins behind the goal, which was in actual fact a huge water butt, of the plastic type you see outside gardne centres, and he ran up and down the terraces celebrating with it on top of his head! The first game back at Champion Hill, of ocurse, when we beat Hendon, in front of the television cameras, after the Tooting groundshare. More recently, for a traditional 'great day out apart from the result' was a couple of seasons ago, when we went down to Devon to play Bideford in the Trophy. That felt like a great 're-union' of old faces behind the goal, with the likes of Christian Burt & Jamie Wyatt returning from 'nowhere', & staying ever since!"
And who have been your favourite Dulwich Hamlet players down the years for us?
"I must confess that I'm not one for really remembering individual players, I've got a bit of a poor memeory for that, I prefer to recall teams rather that the individuals that make one up. But the likes of Andy Fisher, John Egan & Co. from when I first came down spring to mind. And the superb team under Frank Murphy that included the likes of Joe Odegbami, Willie Lillington & Paul Whitmarsh I can't forget either."
Groundwise, how to the northern ones compare to the Isthmian stadiums you've been to?
"A bit of a mix, but on the whole they're same standard of grounds really, but I'd probably say the Isthmian ones are slightly better. Having said that if you like a bit of history in your venues then some of the ones up north would be more for you."
The majority of our fans won't know what the northern grounds are like. I know Prescot have a magnificent old main stand, what are your other favourites up north?
"Yes, our one at Hope Street is a bit of gem. Funnily enough two of my particular favourites are both in the same town. Ossett Albion & Ossett Town, the Yorkshire town, I like. In particular Albion, where you get a lovely panoramic view over the town."
(Interviewers note: If you want to see pictures of either you can to so by clicking on these links: Albion & Town )
And so to the game today, against Lowestoft Town. What did you think of the match, and how do you think we'll fare?
"Personally, it was better than I was expecting. Before the game I'd have been happy with a point, to be honest at the end of the day. I think we made a better start to the game, but they are a side that will clearly do well, so it's a very good win. In terms of how we do, well if we can play consistently then I think there is the chance of the play-off,s but this is a tough division, so it will probably be more like a top half finish."
