Are you bobbing over to the Robins?

Are you bobbing over to the Robins?

Tomorrow, Saturday 5th August, The Hamlet travel to Carshalton Athletic, for our last pre-season warm-up game

It's a three o'clock kick off at Colston Avenue, to take on Bostik League Division One South Carshalton Athletic, a fine venue with a huge open terrace running down one side of the ground. If you want to see what the ground looks like just CLICK HERE, though these were taken before they installed an all-weather pitch a couple of years ago.

They are managed by former Hamlet favourite Peter Adeniyi, and he tries to get his team playing attractive football, as he was renowned for when leading The Hamlet under Gavin Rose.

It's also worth noting that the ground is dog friendly, as long as your pooch has a muzzle & kept on a lead.

Admission for our game is listed as £10 on their website, but a cheaper rate for their pre-season matches, which are as follows: Adults (over 18) £6.00; Senior (over 65) £3.00 and children under 18 £1.00.

If you're driving the postcode for your SatNav is SM5 2PW & the ground address itself is the War Memorial Sports Ground, Colston Avenue, Carshalton. They have a large off-street car park at the ground.

The nearest station is Carshalton, which is a five minute stroll. It is in Travelcard zone five. As you exit on the ticket office side turn right, down to the road, right under the bridge & Colston Avenue is the first on the left...then the ground is down a path/access road, on the right between the houses. The bar is inside the ground, and is quite spacious, and the tea bar is just to the left of the turnstiles as you come in. It takes a mere 33 minutes from London Blackfriars, with the trains going through Herne Hill, Tulse Hill and Streatham; so it's an easy one for our fans.

You can also go via Victoria [which you can also pick up at Clapham Junction] , changing at Sutton.

By bus, if you prefer the 157 goes very close to the ground. This starts at Crystal Palace & meanders via Anerley & Norwood Junction, through East Croydon & Wallington. Or from the other end of the route it starts at Morden Underground Station, if you want to sit on the Northern Line from the Elephant & Castle, going that way.

For those who fancy a 'double' Sutton United are home to Leyton Orient, for their opening Vanarama League National fixture, an early start for the cameras, kicking off at half past twelve. Be aware that the adjacent station to their ground is West Sutton NOT Sutton or Sutton Common.

If that's not your cup of tea, and assuming you're not drinking tea, the nearest Wetherspoons are The Whispering Moon, in Wallington; or you have the choice of two in Sutton, namely The Grapes and The Moon on the Hill.

Nearer to the ground look no further than The Hope, on nearby West Street [turn left away from the railway bridge when leaving the station, in stead of right, under it, toward the ground]

Central Carshalton itself it quite pleasant, but small, around the High Street, and the Ponds. By the water is the Grade II listed All Saints Church; also nearby is another Grade II listed building, sadly only open to the public on Sunday afternoons, the Carshalton House Water Tower. The best thing to see, although I can't personally vouch for it as I've not -shamefully-been there myself- is the Honeywood Museum, the municipal museum for the London Borough of Sutton. This is open on Saturdays, from ten until five.

Finally, slightly further away, but still in the vicinity, is the Sutton Ecology Centre, in Carshalton Village, with the grounds open from 9.00am until dusk.

So there's something for everyone...there's no reason not to make a decent day out of it.
