Can you imagine supporting The Hamlet & Liverpool
Although going on trial is a long way from signing, one Hamlet fan was excited about Danny Carr turning out for his other heroes yesterday
Christian Burt, a Dulwich Hamlet fan from Nunhead, is also a lifelong Liverpool fan. Not one of those who is derided like glory hunting Manchester United fans, who have never set foot in the city, never mind Old Trafford itself. Nunhead Hamlet fan regularly watches the Red Scousers several times a season, when not behind our goal wearing Pink & Blue. We arsked him to tell us what his thoughts were on our Danny Carr having a trial game with his Liverpool...
"Let me tell you the story of a poor boy who was sent far away from his home….
Poor Scouser Tommy"
And so goes the opening line of one of the most famous songs to come from the Spion Kop to be sung week in week out at Liverpool FC.
Over the last few days however, you’d need to change “poor boy” to “talented, dedicated and an all-round nice young man” to describe a Son of Champion Hill making a journey up to Merseyside.
Many Hamlet fans will know I’ve been a Liverpool supporter since I could start talking, although I’ve settled into a Zen like state recently of acknowledging the match day experience as a Dulwich Hamlet fan cannot be beaten, with Liverpool always in my heart (if not hitting my wallet as the last two seasons travelling with my shared season ticket to Anfield did).
With this in mind, one of the website team asked me to pen a short article about our talented goalscoring talent Danny Carr and my feelings of his trial at Liverpool.
Danny Carr stepped up from training at Liverpool’s world famous Academy (and in-between playing 60 minutes for the Hamlet against Sittingbourne!) to start an Under 21’s match in the red of Liverpool versus West Ham United. The story had been covered in the majority of the National Press and friends from Liverpool, particularly those who subscribe to 'The Liverpool Way' and visited Champion Hill early this season, were buzzing for me knowing my rather schizophrenic love of both clubs.
The feelings part: absolute pride at the hard work and no little skill that Danny has shown to get this far. I took out (ahem!), 60 minutes from my daily work grind to watch how he performed on the LFCTV Channel that was screening the match.
And there he is in the Red of Liverpool – not only that, but playing alongside Raheem Sterling (of £30k a week) and Jonjo Shelvey . Both have played for the full England side! You throw in one of the major young talents across Europe, Suso, and Andre Wisdom and I’ve added up that’s four players who have 139 LFC First Team appearances between them. Not to mention that Wisdom won the Euro Under 17’s with England in 2010 and Suso the Euro U.19’s with Spain last year.
So, how does Danny fare in such esteemed company with lads who have full time professional conditioning and preparation? Well, he plays 60 minutes and in the first half shows the good awareness and pace that we’ve seen at Champion Hill and away. John Aldridge, a Liverpool and Ireland centre forward legend is complimentary about Danny, particularly his movement.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is in attendance, and you feel in these matches, that it’s less about the team and more about individuals wanting to stake a claim for inclusion back into the Liverpool first team. One moment sticks in the memory as Danny has the courage to berate Sterling for not sliding him in with an obvious pass.
It’ll be interesting to see how this goes. Will the Academy staff at Liverpool see a gem they can only get fitter, stronger and better? I hope so…..but only after Danny has been part of a title winning side for the Pink n Blues.
For now he is OURS so all together now – "He’s better than Huntelaar, he’s better than Demba Ba, Danny Carr, Danny Carr!"
