Chairman Column vs Hungerford Town, 22/10/22

Read what Ben Clasper had to say in his programme notes ahead of our National League South clash with Hungerford Town from the weekend.

We take a break this week from the usual updates to come together to remember some well-known and much-loved members of our Rabble community. In the week of Mishi Morath’s birthday his family are with us again today and bring with them students from St Anthony’ School which Mishi, his brother Ferenc and his sister Katalin all attended and where they recently ran a poetry competition, one for years 3 & 4 and another for years 5 & 6. The winners have their poems included in today’s programme and also received a trophy and vouchers for Chener Books on Lordship Lane.

Ferenc Morath on Mishi Morath

For those who don’t know Mishi, He was one of Dulwich's most passionate fans. He adored this club and everything about it. He was one of the founders of the original Rabble many years ago, when being anti-racist, anti-sexist and pro LGBT was beyond unusual. He did so much to make Dulwich a 'Community Club' as anyone. It's almost a cliche now that every club claims to be, but without Mishi, I doubt Dulwich would be famous the world over for who and what they have become.

Mishi was a great poet too, and very often the only working-class poet when you went to poetry events. Many of his poems were about the Hamlet, much to the bemusement of many of the attendees. That is why today there are all the winners from St Anthony’s School where a poetry competition is held in his name.

The last piece of the jigsaw is getting the new ground, with its new parks, community facilities and a decent percentage of affordable housing. Then Mishi's ashes can go there and he'll be raising a glass of coke, no ice, happily forever.
