Charity game success...
A great day was had by everyone on Bank Holiday Monday, just under two weeks ago, & the day was praised in the local press
Last weeks edition of the 'Southwark News', for whose chosen charity, their 'Evelina appeal', we staged the game, covered the event in their general news paages:
Dulwich derby racks up cash
Hamlet and Village FC help raise over £1k for our appeal
A Bank Holiday derby encounter between Dulwich Hamlet and Dulwich Village FC raised a grand total of £1,105.95 for our
Evelina Children's Charity Appeal.
The sun came out and fans from both clubs descended on Champion Hill as the News fund got a welcome boost from supporters of both teams.
On the day gate receipts. a raffle with prizes donated by Dulwich businesses, and cash donations for copies of the news made up the lion's share of the donations received.
Two fans, Shaun Dooley and Andrew Finnerty, played half a game each as two squad places were also auctioned off to Hamlet supporters.
The former played courtesy of Christian Burt, who won the bid to play but gave his place to Mr Dooley for his work at Dulwich this season, particularly in regard to setting up the club's '12th Man' fund. Mr Finnerty was able to put in a sizable bid with the help of the Camberwell Free Film Festival.
Hamlet fan Mishi Morath, who played a central part in the day, said: " I'm gobsmacked at the total raised. The Village team and fans really helped, as did our Junior Section, and all the local companies who helped with the raffles. It was an amzing bid from Christian so Shaun could play, and the same from Andy. I'm just proud to be part of our Dulwich Hamlet community helping out. and it was marvellous how Gavin [Rose] and the boys got into the spirit of things by not treating it too seriously, to ensure the Kent County Leaguers had a great day at Champion Hill."
News non-league reporter John Prendergast added: "When I was handed over the cash from the day in the boardroom I was blown away. Then we accumulated another £140 to bring us over not just the £1,000 mark, but more than £1,100. It's been a special season on the pitch thanks to the hard work of Gavin Rose, Junior Kadi, Kevin James and all of the players and the club as a whole showed what they are all about on monday. I have to thank all the Dulwich Village players and fans for coming and supporting us too, plus the junior players, coaches and parents from Hamlet and Village who played and supported us on the day. It was an amazing way to end a season I will simply never forget."
The senior contest between Hamlet and Village ended in a 2-2 draw whilst Dulwich Village notched up wins in both of the junior contests that took place before the main game got underway.
