Dulwich Hamlet 3-1 Faversham Town

Dulwich Hamlet 3-1 Faversham Town

Dulwich claimed the Isthmian Charity Shield in a game of three penalties.

A Dulwich side without Lewis Gonsalves and with Erhun Oztumer and Kevin James rested on the bench overcame Faversham Town with goals from Ian Daly and Marcel Henry-Francis, both from the penalty spot, with a flying header from Kevin James sandwiched in between.

Dulwich were forced into a late change just before kick off as an unwell Mathieu Boyer was replaced by Abdul Mansaray with Nyren Clunis switching to right back.

The Hamlet opened slowly and could easily have gone behind when the lively Renford Tenyue got in behind the defence but failed to beat Phil Wilson at his near post. On 14 minutes Dulwich were ahead as Ellis Green was brought down on the right of the penalty area after a well worked short corner routine. Ian Daly duly coverted from the spot.

However, Faversham were always a threat and Phil Wilson had to produce a fine save on 21 minutes to preserve the lead. Whilst both sides created opportunities there were no further clear cut chances before half time although Marcel Henry-Francis and Ian Daly went close, whilst at the other end Wayne Wilson fired a shot just wide and a slip from Marc-Anthony Okoye almost let in Faversham but he got back to get in a great recovery tackle to prevent a goalscoring opportunity.

Faversham opened the second half brightly and Wayne Wilson was just too high with a free kick from 25 yards before the game settled into a stalemate until just short of the hour mark.

On 59 minutes Ellis Green produced a run and cross from the left that resulted in two blocked efforts at the far post. However, the ball found its way back to Ellis who delivered a cross that half time substitute Kevin James dived to head home.

Dulwich looked comfortable but on 70 minutes a mistimed tackle from Marc-Anthony Okoye sent Tenyue flying and gave Wayne Wilson the chance to thump his penalty past his namesake in the Dulwich goal.

If thoughts now turned to a difficult last 20 minutes for The Hamlet then these were quickly allayed as just two minutes later Marcel Henry-Francis was adjudged to have been fouled in the box and he stepped up to covert the spot kick himself.

It still took a terrific point blank save by Phil Wilson three minutes from time to prevent a grandstand finish as he somehow stopped Tenyue's shot from a Darren Marsden cross.

During the second half Dulwich were able to introduce debutants Adeyinka Cole and Cherno Mendy who both showed promise for the future.
