Dulwich Hamlet backs South London 4 South London campaign
The club is backing the South London 4 South London alongside the Rio Ferdinand Foundation and the Aspire Academy
Earlier in the season, Dulwich Hamlet were proud to announce the launch of the ‘South London 4 South London’ campaign (#SL4SL) in partnership with the Aspire Academy and the Rio Ferdinand Foundation.
Behind the campaign are childhood friends, Peckham born and bred Rio Ferdinand and Dulwich Hamlet manager Gavin Rose. The campaign focuses on changing the negative narrative of young people from South London.
#SL4SL will culminate with Gavin’s testimonial match on Sunday 26th April 2020. This match will see a Rio Ferdinand World team take on a Dulwich Hamlet FC Legends team led by Gavin Rose. Further details about this spectacular season finale will be released in the coming weeks. In the meantime, be sure to put the date in your diary!
Gavin’s testimonial match, will of course, be a fantastic day and an opportunity celebrate the commitment and success that Gavin has had in South London over the last ten years. However, it is important to remember the key aims of the #SL4SL campaign.
Young people in South London get a bad press. They live in the culture capital of the world but are often overlooked by all the opportunities the city has to offer and are distracted by negative role models and the lure of the ‘road life’. Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham have some of the highest rates of youth violence and young lives here are blighted by substance misuse, gangs and a lack of access to decent jobs, housing or opportunity.
Despite this, there are so many talented, resourceful and resilient young people who are willing to work hard to hone their skills and make something of themselves - they just need the right opportunities, role models and support to reach their goals.
Earlier in the season Gavin Rose said, “This is such an important campaign for me, I feel a part of this community and I know that by working with Rio to bring these networks together we can support local young people and make a difference to the South London community”
As part of this campaign Dulwich Hamlet will be running three charity match days, in addition to the ones for our official charity partners, between now and the end of the season.
The #SL4SL charity match days will take place on the following dates:
Saturday 15th February v Welling
Saturday 28th March v Oxford
Saturday 10th April v Eastbourne
Each of these charity match days will allow us the opportunity to shine a spotlight on a local charity or organisation whose fantastic work benefits South Londoners. Details of the charities chosen will be released in the run up to each match. Our first charity we shine a spot light on, will be announced later this week.
If you have any questions about this campaign or would like to get involved with one of these match days, please email one of our community team on:
