A VIEW FROM THE BENCH

"Good afternoon everyone and welcome to today’s game to both our supporters and those who have made the journey up from Worthing.

I’ve been very impressed with the start to the season that Worthing have made. The project they are creating started a few years ago, and we witnessed that by losing 0-3 against them in the FA Cup two seasons ago. They’re a very young side, both on the pitch as well as the management team of Jon Meeney and Gary Elphick, with great ideas and they play with a freedom, and have acquitted themselves extremely well so far this season which is no surprise. We remain wary of the threat caused by their attacking players that played against us in that cup win. Omar Bugiel is someone everyone is talking about, with a few clubs at a higher level showing an interest, and the other two who played that day [Lloyd Dawes and Brannon O’Neill] are very good players as well, but we don’t tend to overly worry about the opposition players, we like to focus on our own squad and as long as we are tactically right, defensively solid and have the right balance going forward, we should be in good shape.

The ‘Pay What You Like Scheme’ is a fantastic initiative by the Club, as it takes away the mercenary aspect of football and that is one of the great things about this Football Club, where we think a little outside the box. We realise it is not all about making money for ourselves and not all about profit margins, and it’s fantastic that we can use the great work that’s done at Dulwich Hamlet to reach out to and help the local community, and I hope that Football Beyond Borders and the Dog Kennel Hill Adventure Playground benefit greatly from the scheme.

I thought our win against Chesham was our strongest performance of the season in terms of our all-round performance. I thought we defended fairly well, we passed the ball fairly well and obviously we converted our chances on Saturday, which was very pleasing. That clinical display has been on the cards for a few weeks, it’s been a criticism of ourselves down the years that we’ve created chances as a team but we haven’t always taken them and I think that from now until the end of the season we really want to hone in on that to see if we can convert more chances and I think that if we do, we’ll be very successful this year. We haven’t started looking at the next round against Winchester, I don’t know much about them, what their style of play is like and I don’t think Junior and Kevin know either, but we will be sending someone to watch them play and then we’ll get an idea of what we can expect then approach that game as and when it comes.

At the beginning of the week we released Roman Michael-Percil from his contract. Roman hasn’t got enough game time this year, which was obviously a little frustrating for him, and for us there is no point in having someone who isn’t playing week in, week out. The reality is that he is still a young lad at 21 and he should still do very well in his own personal career, but he won’t be able to do that if he is sitting on the bench and not getting games. We would have been happy to keep him but he’d have had to have fought his way into the team and whether he believed that was going to happen or not may have played a part in him leaving. I’d like to thank Roman for his services to the Club and wish him all the best for the future.

We took on a Bromley XI on Monday, with several First Team members involved, including Preston Edwards, Sanchez Ming, Quade Taylor, Ibrahim Kargbo, Ibra Sekajja and Danny Carr. In the case of Ibrahim and Alfred, there is no training session that can let them know how close or how far away they are from playing again, and although they started the game quite slowly, they grew into it and started to get around the pitch very well. They’ve both been working hard in the background and we hope to organise another friendly in the next couple of weeks to get them some more minutes. We’re about to enter the hardest part of the season, between now and February, with a lot of games and the pitches starting to wear a bit, and players start to take a bit of a bettering so the more players we’ll have to pick from the better, because I can’t see many teams being able to play the same eleven during this period."
