Hamlet book praised in the local press
The book written by Hamlet fans about last season, has got a great write up by 'Southwark News' reporter & Dulwich fan John Prendergast
It appeared in the current edition of the 'Southwark News', if you like the sound of it & have yet to buy s copy, they are still available on matchdays from the "12th Man" table inside the ground, at a bargain £6 a copy.
Only Way Is Up a fans' view of beloved Hamlet
When something comes along once every 35 years you want a memento that lasts, in case you have to wait that long again, and something that records just how momentous that time was.
There can be no doubt that last season was a special one at Champion Hill. Gavin Rose and his management team finally got their just desserts by bagging a title, and promotion, after two campaigns of what might have been.
Something else happened off the pitch too. When I started covering Dulwich the club were pulling in between 150-200 for home games.
But that changed. Last season two gates topped the 1,000 mark and average attendances trebled.
It seemed that people caught the non-league bug, and coupled with the on field success of the Pink and Blues they came back for more and more.
So how do you remember that special year forever? The mug will eventually get tarnished and t-shirt will eventually fade.
It's to Stephen Desmond's credit that he documented this special season with a book pulled together by him, but very much written by the fans.
'The Only Way Is Up' is a collection of tales from a number of fans about their memories of the year, why it was important to them and why they will treasure it forever.
It's a bit more too. It's raw, poorly written in some parts as you might expect from a vast arhttp://www.dhfc12.blogspot.co.uk/ray of different people, but is from the heart and every chapter has a quirk or charm that not only recalls why last year was so special for Hamlet fans, but also why non-league football is so vital to the game.
People recall why they come to Champion Hill and stayed and how going has reinvigorated their belief that football is not all about cash.
Stalwart fans put the season into a larger perspective and explain why last season was so different, and people pick out moments that mean the world to them and nobody else.
Pick up 'Only Way Is Up' if you want something to remember last season by, or if you don't have a Hamlet link pick it up to look at an alternative view on football-miles away from the big bucks of the Premier League.
I loved the book, it made me laugh, smile and choke up a little. I am Hamlet fan, it's only fair to declare that, but the book has something for all football lovers and you might, just might, fall back in love with the game again should you give non-league football a chance.
