Last week in the papers

Last week in the papers

Here's our regular round-up on all things Hamlet from our local & non league press

We begin the look back at the news with last Sunday’s ‘Non League Paper’, and the report from our end-of-season defeat at Needham Market:

LUKE SAVES NEEDHAM

Needham Market finished the season on a high when they avoided relegation with a victory against Dulwich.
The deadlock was broken on 36 minutes when Dulwich keeper Edwards punched out an inswinging corner to Luke Ingram on the edge of the area, who fired home a first-time volley into the roof of the net.
Needham went in ahead of the break after an impressive first-half performance.
Dulwich came out fired up for the second half but the home side dealt with the pressure well.
Ingram then put his side 2-0 up on the hour mark with another good finish when the Dulwich defence were caught napping and he lobbed Edwards from 15 yards out.
But Dipo Akinyemi responded straight away for the visitors. Side stepping a few defenders, he fired a low shot from 20 yards into the bottom corner.
Dulwich very nearly equalised in the dying moments of the game.
Matt Drage’s cross was headed against the underside of the bar by a Marketmen defender, but luckily bounced back out.
Despite the loss, Dulwich still secured a play-off place thanks to Enfield failing to win.
They travel to Bognor Regis for Thursday’s semi-final.
STAR MAN: Luke Ingram (Needham Market)
ENTERTAINMENT: **** (out of five possible stars)

On Tuesday the midweek edition of the ‘South London Press’ also led it’s non league piece with the play-offs & also mentioned Fisher FC’s last game at our own Champion Hill:

Dulwich just scrape into play-offs despite last-day defeat as Fisher move on

Dulwich Hamlet qualified for the play-offs on Saturday. But it was only because Enfield Town fell a point short at Hampton & Richmond-who clinched the title as a result.
Kingstonian, who had looked favourites to snatch the last spot, lost all of their last four fixtures. Hamlet travel to second-placed Bognor Regis Town on Thursday night to begin their bid to win promotion via the knock-outs.
Dulwich fell behind at Needham through Luke Ingram, who scored in the 36th minute and on the hour. Dipo Akinyemi hit back from 25 yards two minutes later but it was not enough to salvage a point from the game.

On Thursday the weekly ‘Southwark News’ led the non league page with the news before that night’s semi-final down at Bognor:

POINTLESS MARKET TRIP BUT PLAY OFFS FOR HAMLET
Dulwich Hamlet lost their final league game of the season at Needham Market on Saturday but due to results elsewhere they will take part in the post season play offs.
The Pink and Blues lost 2-1 in Suffolk, points that meant Market avoided relegation, but as Enfield Town only drew 0-0 with League champions Hampton and Richmond Borough Dulwich scraped into the play off mix.
A brace of goals from Luke Ingram was enough for Needham to nab three points on Saturday, with Dipo Akinyemi bagging his fifth goal in as many appearances in response for Dulwich.
The Champion Hill side will now take part in the play off mix for the fourth time in six seasons, although they have never been promoted through them.
Tonight Dulwich will travel to Bognor Regis Town for a one-legged semi-final play-off clash, with the winner going through to a final on Bank Holiday Monday.
Hamlet have done the league double over the Sussex side although Bognor have won their last six games on the bounce, a run that took them to within a point of the league title.
The clash will be the third time the pair have contested a play-off game.
Dulwich won the first encounter in 2011, a Ryman League South play-off semi-final game, before Bognor prevailed 1-0 in the same league’s play-off final twelve months later.

That concluded the round-up last week, as there was no Dulwich Hamlet mention in Friday’s ‘South London Press’, as it had gone to print before the game the previous night.
