Local newspapers round-up

Local newspapers round-up

We haven't published the local news for a couple of weeks, apologies just haven't found the time...so here goes with the last fortnight, before the next

Times creeps up, & we have a bit of a backlog, but don't worry we will still cover everything that's printed locally about us..

We begin a two weeks ago, on Tuesday 5th March, the midweek edition of the 'South London Press':

Dulwich keep pace at the top

Dulwich Hamlet kept up the pressure in the Ryman League Division One South title race with a 3-0 win at Ramsgate on Saturday. Eliis Green, Erhun Oztumer and Daniel Carr got the goals as the Hamlet remianed three points behind league-leaders Maidstone with three games in hand. They are away to Merstham tonight.

Two days later Gavin Rose talked about the tough run in, in the weekly 'Southwark News':

Rose thinks his squad can handle what's thrown at them

Dulwich manager Gavin Rose has said he is delighted his squad have embraced a mental attitude that allows them to adapt to all conditions and opponents.
the Hamlet gaffer predicted last week that his squad would cope with the end of a 20 game unbeaten streak, which has left them as live promotion candidates, and his sidecduly picked up six points in five days.
The latest win was a 3-0 defeat of Ramsgate on Saturday with Ellis Green, Erhun Oztumer and Daniel Carr netting in a lsick performance on the coast.
Rose said: We have a way of playing but we can't just think we can turn up and play the way we want all the time. If the pitch is decent then of course the way we play should see us through even if a team is physical but that is not always the case and we must adapt. When I said I was confident in the boys after that streak ended it didn't mean I necessarily thought they would win straight away, it meant that mentally they are good and no matter what happened win, lose or draw they will maintain that."
That attitude is likely to be tested to the full this month as Hamlet will play nine times in total in March ending with a derby game on March 30 away at Tooting.
Rose has personal reason to celebrate this month as he picked up his third manager of the month award this season, after Hamlet lost just once in six contests in February.
On Tuesday night Hamlet travelled to Merstham hoping to continue their push for the title but instead found themselves on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline.
Luke Hickie scored late for the Hamlet after Merstham mounted a three goal lead through a Fabian Saraiva penalty and two second half efforts by Tutu Henriques and Joe Holland.
The results on Tuesday night saw Dulwich slip to third in the league table. They are now a point behind Faversham Town in second spot and six points behind leaders Maidstone.
However they have games in hand on both teams having played four games less than Faversham and three fewer than Maidstone.

The following dsy, Friday 8th March, the Daniel Carr transfer saga was all over the news, both locally & nationally. And the 'South London Press' weekend edition covered the story not once, but twice! I was the lead story in the non-league column:

Dulwich apply breaks to Carr sale

Dulwich Hamlet boss Gavin Rose has vowed that hotshot Daniel Carr wil lremain with the club until the end of the season despite being on trial at Premier League giants Liverpool this week. Carr, who has hit 23 goals in 23 games this season, still played in Dulwich's 3-1 Ryman League Divison One South defeat to Merstham on Tuesday and will feature in tomorrow's clash with Sittingbourne. The 18-year-old went on trial with Championship side Charlton Athletic earlier this season and scored for their U21 side. He was offered a contract by the Addicks but a deal did not go through because Dulwich would not have received any money from the move.
"The deal was not beneficial for both parties,"said Rose explained. "After he came back, a number of big clubs-including Liverpool-came to watch him. He has had a lot of interest but it is early days. We have to make sure his first priority is Dulwich. If we can facilitate a deal for him but he will be with us until the end of the season-so it will not affect us trying to achieve our aims this year."
Rose is impressed by the fact Carr has not let the speculation go to his head. "Daniel has kept his feet on the ground and got on with his job," he said. "He understands he needs to do that and continue to help the team-which is a great attitude to have. We are very happy for him that he has got this chance and we hope he makes the most of it. There are several clubs interested so we can try to get the best deal for the club. we will make sure we get a fee if he does move."
Midfielder Xavier Vidal has also been out on loan recently, with Championship outfit Bolton Wanderers. "It is the same situation with Xavier," Rose said. This sort of thing is normal at this level when you have good young players-there is always interest from professional clubs. If they are young, why not give them that chance?"
Rose has no fresh injury worries for tomorrow's game. Forward Frankie Sawyer could be back in the squad after returning from a loan spell with VCD Athleticof the Kent Hurlimann League.

The same copy of the 'South London Press' also featured the Danny Carr story, for a rare Hamlet appearance on their back page:

Chelsea join queue for Dulwich striker

Chelsea want to take Dulwich Hamlet striker Daniel Carr on trial. The 18-year-old, transformed from a wideman since moving to Champion Hill, has been training with Liverpool this week. And there are also rumours that both Manchester clubs are also tracking the former Reading youngster. Dulwich boss Rose said: "We've got to be careful that Daniel isn't caught up in a circus. The important thing if he does go is that he goes to a club that really wants him. We have reinvented him. He has only played as a striker and he is a totally different player. He has got great movement and is very clever. Daniel is decent technically, beats people on his own and scores all types of goals. At his age it is potential. But if he is taken by the right club and works hard he can play at the top level." Rose says Charlton had agreed a deal for Carr but the transfer fell through. He explained: "We did agree a fee and deal that was suitable to the club and then Charlton turned around afterwards and said they couldn't do it. The solution they offered was feasible for them but din't make sense for us, knowing that other clubs were interested." Carr has scored 23 goals in as many games for the Ryman Division One South side.

On the Sunday, 10th March, our home match with Sittingbourne the previous day was the main feauted match on the Ryman One North & South pages of the 'Non League Paper' :

CLUNIS DOUBLE DOWNS BRICKIES

Dulwich heaped more pressure on Maidstone at the top of the league as they saw off Sittingbourne with ease as they produced a professional and determined performance.
A first-hald performance was enough to blow Sittingbourne away, it took only 54 seconds for Hamlet's Nyren Clunis to rifle a shot past adam Molloy.
And the home side never looked back after starting like an express train and taking the lead early.
Dulwich's lead was doubled in the nineth minute by Xavier Vidal who shot from 25 yards and beat Molloy- it gave the goalkeeper very little chance.
More first half pressure came from Dulwich, and it paid off in the 48th minute when Nyren Clunis doubled his account for the match turning smartly in the box and scoring to effectively end the fixture as a contest.
There was a consolation goal for Sittingbourne in the 88th minute when a rare chance on goal appeared and was taken by Hicham Ackhazzan a second half substitute.
It was no more than their continued determination deserved.
Star man: Nyren Clunis (Dulwich)
Entertainment: ****

And so to the coverage from last week. again we got the top billing in the non-league column of the midweek Tuesday copy of the 'South London Press', on the 12th March:

Dulwich maintain the pressure

Dulwich Hamlet reclaimed second place in Ryman League Division One South with a 3-1 home win over Sittingbourne.
The Hamlet took the lead in the first minute through Nyren Clunis. Xavier Vidal hit the second after nine minutes before Clunis closed the half with his second.
Hicham Akhazza hit a 90th-minute consolation for the Brickies.
Dulwich continue their championship push when they host Crawley Down Gatwick at 7.45pm tonight.
Hamlet striker Daniel Carr was scheduled to play a trial game for Liverpool against West Ham United yesterday. Hamlet manager Gavin Rose said a number of clubs were interested in the 18-year-0ld. "He is probably leaving us at the end of the season. Liverpool are in pole position," Rose said.

Two days later, Thursday 14h, the weekly 'Southwark News' had no less than FOUR Hamlet stories. Two we have already covered as separate articles, last week, when they were published.

One was on the wonderful link up our fans have with their conterparts from the Hamburg club, Altona 93:

https://www.pitchero.com/clubs/dulwichhamlet/news/altona-fans-make-our-local-pap-894288.html

While the other was about money from the fan led "12th Man" campaign in securing the signing of Connor French from Walton & Hersham:

https://www.pitchero.com/clubs/dulwichhamlet/news/why-should-you-give-money-to-t-891687.html

Unsurprisingly, another piece was about our man of the moment, Danny Carr:

Carr's time to decide after Liverpool trial

Hamlet hotshot striker Daniel Carr will sit down this week to decide on his long-term future after impressing in a trial game for Liverpool on Monday.
The eighteen-year-old has swiftly become one of the non-league games hottest properties by bagging eighteen goals in 25 appearances for Dulwich and the big boys of football are seeking his signature.
Carr appeared in a strong Liverpool side, that included first team players Johnjo Shelvey, Raheem Sterling, Suso and Andre Wisdom, and played an hour of a 3-3 draw against a West Ham XI that included Dann Potts, Jordan Spence and Brazilian striker Wellington Paulista.
Both Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers and Hamlet gaffer Gavin Rose were in the stands watching how Carr performed and his current manager was more than happy with his showing.
Rose told the News: "I tohught he did really well considering the company he was keeping. The game had first team and international players on both sides and Daniel played amongst them and you could not tell he played at a different level. I spoke to their staff afterwards and they thought he did well too, and I think they want him to come again and play another trial. They understand our situation with the fixtures we have and we wil lhave to assess that now. It's not fair on him to play twice a week for us and play trials, and it's not good for us either. We are going to weigh up all the options this week, as there are other clubs in for him as well you might not want to see him trial at all, but wil lwant to see him in their environment. We will sit down with Nick Mccormack, Daniel himself and his advisor and go from here to see what the best option is."
Hamlet's fixture backlog means they will have to play a London Senior Cup game tonight, although Rose does not expect to name his strongest eleven for this contest.
Rose was also happy with the showing of new forward Connor French who joined Hamlet from Walton & Hersham. Rose said: "He's an extra body in which we need and he brings something different to the squad as he is good with his back to people and is physical. That could be good for us as we have to play on certain pitches that mean we can't play our normal. Saturday was a great chance for us to send him on and play his game so he can show what he can do and we can then adjust his game to us if we need to."

The last feature was mainly a report on the Sittingbourne match:

Clunis shows Hamlets supremacy over 'Bourne

A dominant first half performance secured an emphatic win for The Hamlet on Saturday blotted only by an injury time consolation goal for Sittingbourne.
Dulwich were in front with only 54 seconds on the clock as Nyren Clunis received the ball on the edge of the box and rifled a shot past keeper Adam Molloy.
The lead was doubled in the ninth minute as Xavier Vidal unleashed a dipping shot from 25 yards that pitched in front of the keeper and nestled in the corne of the net.
After this early onslaught Dulwich remained in the ascendancy with both Daniel Carr and Erhun Oztumer going close before, right on half time, Clunis turned sharply just inside the box and hit a right footed shot home.
Molloy foiled Oztumer and Carr again in the second half, as well as an effort from new signing Connor French, but Sittingbourne capitalised on slack defending with a goal from substitute Hicham Akhazzan in time added on.
On Tujesday night Hamlet's game against Crawley Down Gatwick was postponed after the visitors informed the league they could not get to and from Champion Hill safely due to snow. The game will now be played on Tuesday April 23.
Hamlet are in London Senior Cup action tonight at Champion Hill against Ryman Premier League side Kingstonian, before playing two league fixtures in four days, starting with Saturday's trip to Hythe Town.

And finally, to finish the last two fortnights, the Hamlet piece from the weekend edition from last Friday in the 'South London Press', on the 15th March, where they were concentrating on Danny Car, still:

Carr trial success

Liverpool want to extend the trial of Dulwich Hamlet striker Daniel Carr. But they may not get the chance- because his first loyalty lies with the Champion Hill side. That's the decision of Hamlet manager Gavin Rose, who drove up to watch Carr play for the Reds' 0-0 U21 draw with West Ham on Monday. Carr was alongside former Charlton youth product Jonjo Shelvey and Raheem sterling, who have both played for England. Rose said: "It is not every day one of our players has a trial at Liverpool so I thought I would see how he got on. They were impressed with his performance-and he was playing alongside that calibre of player. Liverpool asked to extend the trial but they know about our fixture backlog so we will have to talk about it. There are other clubs who are also interested, but I don't want him to have trials for the sake of having trials. Even if a deal was agreed tomorrow, we would request a loan-back which Liverpool have said they would agree to, because there are only a couple of months of the season left. They want to look at him for longer because they want a commitment for about three years so everyone wants to make sure it is done properly."
Carr could feature in the league game at Hythe Town tomorrow. "They have a smal lpitch and close you down," said Rose. "It is possible to catch leaders Maidstone-they are six points ahead of us but we have three games in hand. We are very focussed on trying to get promotion-the last two years, we have fallen agonisingly short and after four years here it would be great for me to finally do it."
A Hamlet side were due to host Kingstonian in the London Senior Cup last night.
