London Senior Cup preview
A non-league fan, 'Hawkwind', has previewed the opening rounds of the London Senior cup, on the Non League Matters website forum
This is the former site run by the late Tony Kempster, the replacement, Non League Matters taking over when he passed away a few seasons ago.
Here is the London Cup draw & preview:
The draw from the London FA website
And Hawkwind's preview:
It looks from the draw that the London FA have chosen to reward performance in last season's competition, the four semi-finalists given byes to round 2. I think that's a really great decision. Can anyone on the inside confirm.
The loss of the Step 6 clubs aligns the competition with neighbours Hertfordshire, Middlesex and Surrey, and Trophy winners excepted with Kent. Halstead Town and Saffron Walden Town may be the only Step 6 clubs playing in a 'London' Senior Cup competition by virtue of their league placing in 2013-14.
Onto the draw.
An exciting competition in prospect.
The opening round sees one heavyweight clash with Dulwich Hamlet welcoming Hendon to Champion Hill. Dulwich, four times FA Amateur Cup winners between the two World Wars, are back in the Isthmian Premier after a marvellous Championship winning campaign in which they had to overcome the injustice of the Leatherhead affair, while Hendon, whose three FA Amateur Cup triumphs came between 1960 and 1972, lifted this very trophy less than 18 months ago. Elsewhere Cockfosters, Cray Valley Paper Mills, Croydon, Hanwell Town, and Haringey Borough have home ties against Isthmian opponents, while Erith Town take on giants Welling United. Football League Wimbledon might appear to be the club to beat, but this competition will not be a priority and a mixture of youth and fringe players will no doubt form their eleven for the opening encounter with Barking. An intriguing tie given that last season the Dons only sneaked past their Essex Senior League opponents on penalties. There are also two Essex Senior versus Kent encounters, London Bari and Tower Hamlets welcoming Beckenham Town and Fisher across the water. Groundhoppers arriving from the south for these matches should note that the scenic Woolwich Ferry route, a recommended treat for visitors to the capital, will only be available pre-match. Thamesmead Town should be too strong for Greenhouse London, and finally there is the clash of culture tie between ex-Southern League Erith & Belvedere and the amateur men from Tolworth.
It would be amiss not to at least look ahead to the second round matches of the four heroes of the 2012-13 competition. Groundhog day in prospect perhaps for Cray Wanderers, who having won 4-3 at Kingsmeadow last season may have to defy Wimbledon again. Wingate & Finchley should have no fear from a home game with Isthmian 1 South opposition that may have to endure the preparatory trials and tribulations of a North Circular Road journey. With the greatest respect to London Bari and Fisher, holders Bromley will expect this tie to provide safe passage into the quarters. Finally, Kingstonian will be desperately hoping that it's third time lucky after two disappointing finals at Imber Court. I believe that there is every chance that they will prove too strong for Cockfosters or Redbridge.
