Lots in the local papers this week

Lots in the local papers this week

Here's what was reported in the 'South London Press' & the 'Southwark News'

There was a bumper report in the midweek edition of the 'South London Press' on Tuesday, as they had extra sapce to fill, with Millwall, Crystal Palace & Charlton Athletic all not playing, due to it being a vlank international weekend for them.

HAMLET WASTEFUL IN FRONT OF GOAL

Dulwich Hamlet boss Gavin Rose called for his side to be more ruthless in front of goal after a frustrating home defeat to Bognor Regis Town on Saturday.
The South Londoners were out-thought and outplayed throughout the game that was settled by Doug Tuck's composed strike in the 49th minute.
The loss was Hamlet's first at Champion Hill in the league this season and Rose insists that their profligacy in front of goal proved to be their downfall. "There were times in the first half where we should have taken the lead but we didn't show any confidence when we were through on goal," he said. "Once those opportunities go, it gives the other team an opportunity to creep back into the game and start to get involved territotially. Bognor, as a team, are good at that. They pass the ball well, they're organised and their shape is always good. As the game went on we moved further and further away from being a threat. We just needed to be more ruthless. In games like that, you're not going to have a lot of chances. When you play against teams that are going to be there or thereabouts this season, you need to be ruthless when you get opportunities. You can't think you're going to score more goals, because, invariably you won't. This has been a similar thing in some of our last games where we have dominated but not been clinical enough in front of goal and that is something we need to address."
Rose also admitted that the shock of conceding took a lot of energy and hunger out of the team. He said: "We were overly disappointed by the fact we went behind. We should have just played the game. We were thinknig that we were a goal behind and started to become desperate- that's not how football should be played. You have to do the right thing on the pitch, regardless of the situation, but we were probably too emotional after the goal."
In an even first half both sides squandered opportunities to take the lead. Shawn McCoulsky had the game's first chance but his tame effort was blocked by Bognor Regis stopper Chris Winterton. After the break, the visitors upped the ante with a slick passing game and great movement. They were good value for their win.
Unlike the away side, Dulwich looked disorganised and bereft of ideas. They had few chances and provided poor service to the front men; a shadow of the side that comprehensively beat Bury Town in their last home game.
Bognor's persistence paid off four minutes into the second half, when a cross into the box was headed away by Dulwich captain Terrell Forbes and fell straight to Doug Tuck, who slotted a cool finish past Oshane Brown to give the visitors the lead. It was a deserved goal for Tuck, who marshalled the middle of the pitch and was the focal point of his team's display.
Dulwich were nearly undone again soon after when a poor pass back into their own area, and a slip by Brown, left striker Jason Prior with an open goal but Forbes was on hand to head what had looked to be a certain goal off the line. Hamlet were shellshocked, and had no reply to going behind. They were unable to get the quick, creative play shown in their last league encounters going and looked flat and uninspired.
Even the usually vibrant Dulwich supporters were stunned into silence as the team struggled to make any real impact.
The away side had plenty of chances to put the game to bed, but a flurry of Brown saves prevented a more convincing scoreline.
Despite the defeat, Dulwich stay fourth in the Ryman League Premier Division, one point behind nearest rivals Hendon, having played a game more.
Dulwich will hope for better fortunes in their next match against Walton & Hersham in the first round of the Robert Dyas League Cup at Champion Hill tonight.

Dulwich Hamlet: Brown 7, Hibbert 5(Candolini 68, 4), Shaw 5, Samuels 6, Forbes 6, Pinnock 6, Clunis 5 (Mansaray 80), Carew 5, McCoulsky 4, Vidal 5, Graham 5 (McDonald 68,4). Not used: Gonsalves, Hysi.
BEST MOMENT Doug Tuck's composed finish to give Bognor Regis the lead. He showed great calmness to place the ball past Dulwich goalkeeper Oshane Brown.
WORST MOMENT The shaky defending by Dulwich, typified by Brown's slip inside the penalty area, that allowed Bognor striker Jason Prior to shoot at goal.
BOSS SUMMARY "We should have made more of our chances, but we were rpone to bad decision making. At the start of the second half, we had chances to go at them but didn't take advantage. You have to work the keeper.
STAR MAN
Oshane Brown- He continues to take advantage of his opportunity in the first team. The stopper prevented his side from being completely thrashed with a string of fine stops to deny the impressive Bognor Regis.
MATCH RATING: 6

Yesterday's weekly edition of the 'Southwark News' also commented on the Bognor game:

Returning Prior the difference

Hamlet boss Gavin Rose feels the return of striker Jason Orior to the Bognor line up proved to be the critical factor in his team's weekend loss at Champion Hill.
Prior was prolific, 95 goals in 121 appearances, in his previous spell at Bognor which eventually led him to sign professional terms with AFC Wimbledon.
Injuries have slowed down his career and he resigned for his former club on loan just in time to take on Dulwich on Saturday.
Although the frontman did not net at the weekend, instead a second half effort from Doug Tuck split the teams, Rose felt Prior was the difference on Saturday.
The Dulwich gaffer said: "I felt we played against a good team and the return of Jason Prior made a huge difference to them. We had opportunities in the first half but the boys did not get their shots off. But the level of the game was a top five match and it was a contest between two teams who operate at the top of the league."
A crowd of 1,061 came through the turnstiles at the weekend and Rose felt many may have been duped by the oppositions form this campaign, something the Hamlet boss felt was a red herring.
He told the News: "Maybe a few people looked at their league position and were surprised at how they played. But they did not surprise us. At some point this season they were going to get it right, they have had player changes and injuries, like us, but on Saturday it was just a good level contest. With regard to us we just didn't get shots off when we had the opportunities, but Bognor did not dominate the game by any means and they scored a goal that was a good one too."
On Tuesday night Hamlet got their League Cup campaign underway with a contest against Walton & Hersham. The game ended 2-2 after 90 minutes, with Dean McDonald and Michael Kamara scoring for Dulwich, before Walton went on to win the contest 4-1 on penalties.
Dominic Ogun scored Hersham's first goal of the night and Andrew Dalhouse forced the shootout, that took place after 90 minutes, with a last minute equaliser.

There was also a piece in the same 'Southwark News' about our treatment table:

Injuries continue to mount for Hamlet

Winger Nyren Clunis has returned to the lnog list of injured players at Champion Hill as Dulwich's campaign continues to be dominated by crocked stars.
Inconsistent form this campaign has seen Hamlet lose four league contests and at the weekend their unbeaten home record this season against Bognor Regis Town.
Clunis has been dogged by injuries this season and he returned to the treatment room after being substituted on Saturday.
Hamlet manager Gavin Rose feels his sides inconsistency has been understandable due to injury problems.
He said: "Our hands have been tied to a certain point as Kevin James, Harry Ottaway and Dean Lodge have essentially been injured all season. It now looks like Nyren Clunis has another injury and we have picked up a lot of them this season. But with these type of players we can't just go and get a like for like replacement as we have committed to them."
But despite this Dulwich remain in fourth place in the table after Saturday's round of fixtures, something Rose thinks is admirable in the circumstances.
He added: " I think our view has not changed and we will be looking to stay in and around things. We have moved lots of players around yhis year and our league position is far from disgraceful, in fact I would say it is pretty healthy."

Finally, todays weekend edition of the 'South London Press' focussed on one of our young players Xavier Vidal:

NO RUSH FOR A BIG BREAK

Vidal told to follow Oztumer's progress

Xavier Vidal has been told there is no rush for him to become the latest Dulwich Hamlet youngster to make the jump into the Football League.
That is the message from Champion Hill boss Gavin Rose-who believes it is a question of when, not if, the prospect gets his big chance. Vidal is top of Dulwich's scoring charts with six goals this season and has featured 17 times. Professional clubs have already had a look at the South Londoner, who spent time training with Bolton Wanderers.
But Rose says that Erhun Oztumer, who dazzled for Dulwich before earning a move to League One Peterborough in the summer, is an example that Vidal should follow. "We're at the point now where the boy needs to settle down and play week in and week out," said Rose. "If he performs every week then I'm sure those clubs that have shown an interest will still be monitoring him. He has to let his football do the talking over a longer time, like Erhun did. Erhun had that consitency over two years without many murmurs or opprtunities-but if you keep doing well then it forces people's hands. Xavier is only 19 and Erhun left us when he was 23. Sometimes Rome wasn't built in a day. You have to earn your right and it will happen if you continue to do well."
Rose is hoping that some of the club's injury problems are abating-with keeper Phil Wilson (groin) and Nyren Clunis (shoulder) both possible returnees at Met Police tomorrow. Striker Harry Ottaway is set for an MRI scan on his injured leg to find out if there is a break or a stress fracture. Midfielder Dean Lodge, who injured his ankle on the first day of the season, is also closing in on a return. Rose said: "It's not been easy with the injuries we have had but at the same time it is just football-you know it can happen. Injuries are part and parcel of the game and you just have to ride the storm as best you can. Met Police have not lost at home this season-they are formidable there. There team doesn't look to be changing too much as they have got that bit of consistency. It will be a very tough game for us."
Hamlet exited the Robert Dyas League Cup on Tuesday as they conceded a last-minute equaliser to make it 2-2 on the night against Walton & Hersham-going on to miss two of their three penalties as they were sent packing 4-1 0n spot-kicks. Dean McDonald's penalty had cancelled out Dominic Ogun's opener for the visitors. McDonald's goalbound chip washeaded over the line by Michael Kamara as Dulwich took the lead just past the hour mark. But Andrew Dalhouse struck in stoppage time and only Kershaney Samuels was able to convert in the shootout. McDonald struck the bar while Brandon Hobbs' effort was saved.
Rose said: "In the first half we were average. We were the better side in the second half and they didn't get out of their half much-which is what you'd expect playing a team at the bottom of their league. We were not clinical enough-we had the opportunities to put the game to bed."
