Maidstone United 4-3 Dulwich Hamlet

Maidstone United 4-3 Dulwich Hamlet

A match where Dulwich will long ask just how they lost as they created the better chances only to lose to a fortuitous injury time goal.

With the kick off delayed by 15 minutes to ensure the crowd were all inside before the kick off, both sides quickly got into their stride.

With Erhun Oztumer, back from his week long trial with Championship high flying Burnley, pulling the strings and with good movement up front from new signing Tommy Whitnell, it was Dulwich who looked the more dangerous. Whitney had a good early chance as he was released on goal but scuffed his shot straight at Worgan.

At the other end a good cross was headed against the post and back into Tim Brown's hands as Maidstone upped the pace. However, it was Dulwich who grabbed the lead in the 26th minute as Nyren Clunis ran from halfway along the left and then cut back inside. He then unleashed an u unstoppable right foot shot that had Worgan clutching at thin air as the ball flew past his despairing dive.

Soon after it was so very nearly two as Erhun Oztumer was left with an unchallenged shot that Worgan did well to block and the covering defenders just managed to deflect the follow up wide.

Just as Dulwich seemed in control so the home side levelled in the 37th minute. Kevin James gave the ball away to Alex Flisher who ran at the heart of the defence. He appeared to fall as he tried to get past the defence and also handle the ball on the ground before he stood up and beat Brown low to his right.

HALF-TIME 1-1

Dulwich started the second half well and five minutes in Whitnell opened his account for the club as Ahmed Deen delivered a great cross and Whitnell got on the end of it to steer a volley home from the edge of the six yard box.

Maidstone worked their way back into the game as Brown was unable to hold a shot and Jack Harris swept home a 59th minute equaliser. Six minutes later they had the lead as a mishit shot somehow found its way to Harris at the far post.

Two minutes later it was all square as Erhun Oztumer somehow netted as he followed up after a good save from Worgan and from wide of the near post flicked a volley in off the far post as defenders tried to get back on the line.

Dulwich should then have had a penalty as a great ball in saw Erhun Oztumer force a great save from Worgan as he clawed out his header and then recovered to go Nyren Clunis. However, as Whitnell tried to bring the ball down he was bundled over from behind. The referee then blew it bizarrely for treatment to an injured Clunis and then restarted play by giving the ball to Worgan in an uncontested drop ball.

The game continued end to end and with 90 minutes up a great ball from Oztumer left Clunis clear and his shot beat Worgan but hit the post and bounced back into his arms.

With time almost up Maidstone forced a corner which Dulwich initially cleared but Dan Parkinson blocked this attempt and the ball rebounded off him into the top corner to seal the win for the home side.
