Official Charity Partner 2018/19

Official Charity Partner 2018/19

We’re really pleased to announce that we have chosen youth work charity ‘Redthread’ as our charity partner for the 2018/19 season.

Redthread began as a youth club in Dulwich back in 1995, and since then has developed into a network of programmes supporting young people across London and the Midlands. Redthread’s projects at King’s College Hospital and St George’s Hospital are local to both DHFC’s current home and its original community.

Redthread supports young people through the vulnerable transition to adolescence, to ensure that they lead safe, healthy and happy lives.

John Poyton, Redthread CEO, said: “We are delighted that Dulwich Hamlet Football Club have chosen Redthread as their charity partner for the season. We look forward to working together and this is a great opportunity for Redthread to build relationships in the local community.”

Hamlet Director, Tom Cullen said: “Dulwich has a proud history of community engagement and over the years, many young people fr om south London have been given an opportunity in our youth and first teams. It is therefore vital that we support the current generation through awareness of Redthread, who provide an intervention in a cycle of violence and abuse that some are facing.”

What do Redthread do?

Redthread supports young people through the vulnerable transition to adolescence, to ensure that they lead safe, healthy and happy lives.

The Youth Violence Intervention Programme started at King’s College Hospital 13 years ago and today operates eight A&E departments. The youth work team work alongside the clinical staff and meet young patients as soon as they can: in the A&E waiting room, on the ward, or even in the resuscitation bay. This moment of intense crisis, when the young person is nursing a serious injury in the daunting environment of a busy hospital, often alone, can be a catalyst for self-reflection and pursuing positive change – a ‘teachable moment’. After leaving the hospital, Redthread mentor and advise the young person and support them to make long-term positive plans.

The Well Centre, based in Streatham, was set up in 2011 and offers young people a ‘one-stop shop’ where they can access a GP, youth worker and mental health professional under one roof. This model of holistic healthcare supports young people to be fully equipped to navigate the challenges that adolescence brings.

Make sure you look out for fundraising and awareness days at future matches!
