Our newspaper round-up
Here's all the Hamlet stories from the printed press over the last week...
Starting with the 'Non League Paper' from seven days ago, our own manager Gavin Rose featured in an article they ran on whether 'Rooney Rule' from American Football will be good for our game, with the Football League looking to introduce it on our side of the pond as a means of increasing the number of Black Asian & Minority Ethnic managers from 2016-17.
There was a balanced piece from Johnson Hippolyte, the former Dulwich Hamlet player, who is an ex-manager at both Yeading & Maidenhead United, under the heading 'One job makes it worth it'...
This was followed by a piece from our own manager, Gavin Rose, which was as follows:
IT SEEMS DRASTIC MEASURE"Whether the Rooney Rule is a good thing or not, only time will tell. But I think ti could be something that has a political agenda. If someone has to get higher, then they should get higher. Clubs shouldn't need to go through this sort of thing just to hire someone.
Myself and my coaching team are in football because we love the game and we're trying to do the best we can at it. We're not thinking about the colour of our skin being a reason why we might not progress. We look at ourselves and, if we do enough, we will have a chance at progressing in our careers.
There may well be a feeling in terms of black managers and coaches not getting opportunities, fair enough. But I don't know that we need to go through such a drastic measure to change it.
What I think needs to happen is forward-thinking people at a club to get black managers in and it can go on from there. Thirty or forty years ago there weren't any black players-now there are lots.
This is me saying this now. In two years' time when it's brought in, it may work really well. So I'm open-minded about it but I'm not sitting here now thinking, 'Right, I've got a chance now'. I've always felt I've got a chance if I do well anyway. "
The same eidtion of the 'Non League Paper' also picked up on our recent transfer activity on their 'Ryman :League News' page:
SPEEDY ROSE NABS DANNYGavin Rose thinks beating the rush for Danny Waldren's signature is the reason why Dulwich Hamlet landed him. The 26-year-old, who plays in midfield or defence, was part of Bromley's Conference South title win last season. And when he became avaialable, Hamlet boss Rose moved quickly.
"I've known Danny for years," he said. "Normally to get lads from a higher level it goes down to the relationship you have and he's known us for a long time now. We've always been impressed with him, by what he's done and his achievements. The opportunity came up and we got in there quickly. If we hadn't I don't think we would have stood a chance."
In Tuesday's midweek copy of the 'South London Press' another recent signing we've already mentioned on here, the official Dulwich Hamlet website, also got a headline:
Hamlet find a PennyFormer Millwall striker Charlie Penny has become Dulwich Hamlet's fourth capture of the close season.
The 20-year-old arrives from Conference National side Welling United.
Penny scored the winning goal for Wealdstone at Margate in April 2014 to help them clinch the Ryman League Premier Division title.
The forward signed for Welling that summer after his release by the Lions.
Ashley Carew has signed a new contract with Hamlet. The central midfielder scored 12 goals in his 47 appearances in the previous campaign-chipping in with 10 assists.
And on Thursday, in the weekly edition of the 'Southwark News', the big story was Gavin Rose committing himself to two more years in the Hamlet hotseat:
Rose signs two year deal at HamletDulwich Hamlet may have made their most important signing of a busy summer after manager Gavin Rose agreed a two year contract extension this week.
Rose, a former Dulwich Hamlet player, has guided the club to the brink of the sixth tier of English football since he returned as manager in 2009.
Under his stewardship as the club's longest-serving manager, Dulwich have enjoyed a period of sustained success, securing the Ryman League South title and the Isthmian Charity Shield in addition to two League Cup final appearances.
"I am really pleased to sign this extension with Dulwich," said Rose. "I have a great affinity with the club, the players, the fans, the board and the community in and around Champion Hill."
Rose has been busy signing players for next season with four new faces, Mitchell Nelson, Jacob Erskine, Danny Waldron and Charlie Penny coming in and the Dulwich boss tol the News this week that one or two others are due to follow imminently.
Three players, Nyren Clunis, Ethan Pinnock and Ashley Carew, have signed one year deals to tie them to Dulwich next season.
The remaining members of last season's squad who stay at Champion Hill will do so on a non-contract basis.
Speaking about Rose's commitment to the club Matt Rimmer, Head of Communications for club owners Hadley Property Group, said: "We are delighted that Gavin has committed to Dulwich Hamlet FC. That is a positive step and matches our own commitment to securing the future of the football club."
Hamlet Chairman Jack Payne added: "Gavin has been key to the club's success in recent years so we are really pleased he has signed an extension. Gavin's continued commitment to the club will hopefully be the springboard for future success as we seek promotion next season."
Dulwich were recognised for their community work at the weekend when the club were given the Barry East Award at the Ryman Football League Banquet.
Finally, to complete our newspaper round-up from the last seven days, is a piece from Friday's weekend copy of the more localised 'Dulwich & South London Press':
Hamlet chief: Gav deserves itDulwich Hamlet manager Gavin rose has been praised for his commitment after signing a two-year deal this week.
The long-serving boss has led the Champion Hill side to the Ryman League Division One South title. And they lost 2-1 to Margate in the play-offs last season as they missed out on promotion to Conference South.
Chief Executive Martin Eede admitted that Rose-who has helped a succession of players back into the Football League along with revitalising the club's fortunes- must have attracted interest from other teams.
"We've never had anything official but I would say, being a man of the footballing world, that it is hard to imagine there hasn't been," said Eede. "So more power to him for sticking with the job he has taken on. We've not given a manager a two-year contract in my time. After Frank Murphy's reign we had a few financial problems-I was running it and just trying to keep it going. So we hadn't really had that period of success to gauge that it was a good thing to offer a longer deal. Gavin has proved himself to be on a mission- and that is to try and take Dulwich as far as he can go. It is very, very pleasing that he is backing himself to continue the good work he has done so far. It's fantastic to keep that continuity going. As everybody can see it has been a busy transfer market in the summer so far and we're clearly not satisfied with a fourth-placed finish last season."
Rose returned as manager in 2009. Amongst those players to have thrived under his guidance are Erhun Oztumer, who signed for Peterborough a year ago, while West Ham signed striker Paul McCallum. Quade Taylor and Michael Chambers were signed by Crystal Palace. Most recently Rose allowed Xavier Vidal to join Conference Premier outfit Welling-with the club having a 50 per cent sell on.
"We are now at a level where we are vastly-respected for our present day achievements and performances," said Eede. "Previously it felt like respect came for our history and days gone by. We are an established force in the non-league world now. We had an England C international this year [Frazer Shaw] and if we have not got promoted in the last five years then we have been in a play-off situation. No-one can look from the outside and think we are anything other than a well-established club at this level with potential to push on."
