Preview: Dulwich Hamlet vs Fulham
Dulwich Hamlet welcome Fulham to Champion Hill this Sunday
Dulwich’s League campaign continues this weekend as we face Fulham this Sunday at 2pm. Following QPR’s victory against Aylesford, we have dropped to 2nd, while Fulham currently sit in 7th.
We have already faced Fulham twice this season, both on their turf. In the League fixture, Dulwich came from 3-2 down to win 4-3 in front of a crowd of over 450 at Fulham’s Motspur Park ground. The other game was a 3-0 victory in the League Cup.
Despite these two wins, captain Brit Saylor is taking nothing for granted. “Fulham are a tough side,” she says. “We’ve played them twice already and each game was a battle. I don’t expect this game will be any different.”
Last weekend’s 1-1 draw against Denham United was not the result the team were looking for and Dulwich were probably unlucky not to take all three points. Saylor adds, “The first half wasn’t ideal for us. We’ve only had two proper games in almost two months so it took a while to get into the rhythm. After we moved back into our normal formation in the second half, we controlled the game. We’re hoping we can take that tempo into this match.”
Playing at Champion Hill will always give Dulwich a strong home advantage and the team are unbeaten in the League when playing here. It’s a matchday experience which Saylor relishes. “It’s the best,” she says. “The pitch is divine. Our fans are the quality. We definitely have the most consistent vibes of all the teams in our league and probably the two leagues above!”
Success this season has often started from the back. Dulwich have the best defensive record in the League and have only 9 goals so far this season. Saylor credits this to the performances of both goalkeepers: Kate Aldridge and Marie Louis.
“Both of our keepers are solid when tested. They’ve both come up with great saves this season. In addition, we’ve been very disciplined when it comes to our game plan, which often prevents teams from getting quality chances on goal.”
We are proud to be celebrating LGBTQ History Month at the Fulham game and there will be a selection of Dulwich Hamlet rainbow merchandise on sale at the game, with proceeds going to Football v Homophobia and the AKT Charity.
Saylor said, “Being a part of a club that’s inclusive is extremely important to all of us. It was one of the main reasons we wanted to merge with Dulwich to begin with. So it’s really nice to be a part of this inclusivity and support the LGBTQ community.”
