PREVIEW: Hungerford Town (H) 12/09/21
This Sunday, after back-to-back away trips, Dulwich Hamlet make a return home to Champion Hill to face off against Hungerford Town.
Due to COVID-19 protocol, which saw last weekend’s Braintree fixture cancelled for
Hungerford, The Hamlet’s clash with The Crusaders has been pushed back a day. So, on an
unfamiliar Sunday afternoon slot (3pm Kick Off), The Rabble will be able to return to
Champion Hill after a couple of matchdays on their travels to watch this Vanarama National
League South fixture.
With an eye on the FA Cup Second Round Qualifying draw earlier in the week- which saw
Gavin Rose’s men pull a home tie against Bedfont Sports and Sunday’s visitors draw a home
tie against Truro City. Any hope of an FA Cup adventure will have to be pushed to one side
with attentions fully turned to this league clash, as The Hamlet will look to try to and secure
a first home win of the campaign.
With the positive COVID case in the Crusaders camp last weekend, Hungerford’s last action
came at the end of August when two second half goals turned around a 1-0 deficit away at
Dorking. Sandwiched in between that and an opening day victory away at Welling is the
side’s only defeat, a 3-1 home defeat to Tonbridge. Danny Robinson’s side have therefore
accumulated six points from their opening three which puts them 9th in the Vanarama
National League South table.
The Hamlet find themselves two places lower in 11th, with their most recent outing against
Eastbourne Borough culminating in a point after what was an entertaining 2-2 draw.
Following on from that impressive 6-0 win at Hemmel Hempstead and last Saturday’s
outcome, Gavin Rose’s side will now look to make it three without defeat so long as they
avoid a negative result at Champion Hill on Sunday. A victory would also mark a first home
win of the 2021/22 season for Dulwich, after a draw against Chippenham Town and a defat
to high-flying Dartford FC currently leaves their home points haul for the season at just one
to date.
Dulwich Hamlet will look to their strong recent record over The Crusaders for inspiration,
winning four out of the last five meetings. The sole defeat came in the early stages of the
19/20 season in a game which saw The Hamlet let slip of a two-goal lead. The most recent
encounter between the pair came back in December of last year in front of a reduced
number of fans at Hungerford’s home-Bulpit Lane, as goals from Andre Blackman, Sanchez
Ming, and Tyrique Hyde gave Dulwich a comfortable victory in Berkshire.
