Preview: St Albans City (H) 19/02/22
The Hamlet return to the Hill this weekend when they face off in a crunch tie against fellow play-off seekers, St Albans City.
Fresh off the back of a much needed three points on Tuesday night away at Welling United, Gavin Rose's men will not only head into Saturday's visit of the Saints with a spring in the step after a crucial win, but with a performance to match also in their back pockets. Two-goal hero Quade Taylor highlighted after the match that although in their last victory a few weeks back against Concord, despite the eventual emphatic scoreline, the Hamlet were not at the peak of their powers. The midweek Tuesday triumph, however, provided a spirited performance after one of the worst showings Dulwich had put up this season just three days prior against bottom-placed Billericay. Taylor's early opener had come after a host of visitor pressure on the Wings goal, then with Chike Kandi doubling the lead before half time, it was one of the more controlled halves of the season. Taylor's second had initially settled any nerves, until a late penalty converted by ex-Hamlet forward Dipo Akinyemi may have had a few nerves jangling. But there was a resilience shown by the Hamlet to hold on for the three points which has setup Saturday's fixture against St Albans to be a compelling affair.
With the Hamlet now up to 6th in the Vanarama National League South Standings, the Saints have fallen three points behind the SE22 outfit, although, due to their postponed fixture against Concord on Tuesday the number of games in hand on Rose's troops now tallies at three. City have come into a rough patch of form, similarly to that of the Hamlet, with just three wins in their previous ten contests. They come into Saturday's fixture after back-to-back defeats against both Braintree and Ebbsfleet, but will hope to return to the performances constituting six points against Havant & Waterlooville and Slough in the two games prior.
The pair matched up against each other back in November just nine days on from the Saints memorable FA Cup upset over League Two high-flyers Forest Green Rovers. The celebrations were short lived though as the Hamlet brought them quickly back down to earth in a scintillating seven-goal thriller at Clarence Park. A Kandi brace, alongside goals from Darren McQueen and Danny Mills, ensured all three points returned to the Hill after Dulwich had to score late on to disregard what had been a St Albans fight back from 3-1 down. City's last visit to Champion Hill also involved 87th minute drama, again favouring the South East London side, as a Sam Merson own goal gifted the ten men of Dulwich a 2-1 victory.
