Remembering Hugh Porter
Longstanding Hamlet fan passed away in January following battle with brain cancer.
Hugh Porter, a longstanding Dulwich Hamlet fan, lost his battle with brain cancer in January. Hugh, 52, was originally from Scotland and followed Partick Thistle growing up but adopted the Hamlet when he moved to East Dulwich in the early 2000s.
Known to his pals as Shug, Hugh loved going to the Hamlet - not least because of the opportunity to drink beer pitch side through the game! Of course promotion to the National League would put an end to this, so despite being a loyal fan, he didn't necessarily want them to get promoted!
Hugh was also a regular at Mackenzie’s Boxing Fitness Gym at the Champion Hill Stadium.
In the summer of 2019 Hugh was rushed to hospital with a five-centimetre tumour in his brain. After surgery at King’s College Hospital, and a further operation for a stem cell transplant, the cancer went into remission.
While in hospital he was delighted to receive a get-well card signed by the entire Hamlet first team. He was back at Hamlet for the FA Cup 1st Round match against Carlisle in November 2019: chemo and rain would not stop him going.
In July 2020, he and a group of friends cycled 100 km from Selhurst Park round all 12 London football league grounds, finishing at Dulwich Hamlet, to raise money for Lymphoma Action.
He chose a bike ride around south London stadiums after passing several of them during lockdown cycles. The ride began from Crystal Palace’s Selhurst Park – Hugh also watched Crystal Palace – and included Millwall, Wimbledon, Brentford, and Charlton Athletic’s grounds.
Hugh was a massive football fan, always the last at the bar, was great company and loved by all his friends. Husband to Susan and dad to Maggie and Hamish, he will be missed by all who knew him, including those on the terraces at Champion Hill.
Donations in Hugh's memory should be made to Lymphoma Action.
The article pictures show Hugh arriving at the end of his cycle ride at Champion Hill in 2020.
