Rose finally has budget to tempt frontman Vines
Dulwich Hamlet boss Gavin Rose believes he finally has the wage budget to be re-united with striker Paul Vines.
The frontman played and scored for the Champion Hill side as they won 2-1 in their opening pre-season friendly against Dagenham & Redbridge on Tuesday night.
Vines was prolific during a spell with Tooting & Mitcham, his form eventually leading to a switch to Kingstonian. But Rose said: " My management team can take some credit because we hadPaul when he was an unknown at Beckenham Town. He was very slight then but really developed-not just in terms of goals but his all-round game. After that he went to Tooting and they got promotion. The reason he has come to us is because we've known him a long time - we were the first to have him in non-league. Now we can maybe put something on the table which is financially good enough for him to play for us. We've not been in that position before."
Dulwich also fielded ex-Met Police and Terrors midfielder Billy Crook, Jerome Walker, who had been at Concord Rangers, and former Lewes man Karl Beckford against the Daggers. Experienced defender Terrell Forbes also had a runout but has full-time offers in the pipeline.
Rose said: "In the next two weeks we'll be looking to button down the squad. For now we are giving everyone a fair crack of the whip- it is an open field in terms of trying to win a deal. We played two strong 11s against Dagenham. We were very happy with the fitness of the players- in terms of results we won't be concerned until a week or two before the season starts."
Dulwich fought back from a goal down at the interval with Vines volleying them onto level terms. Walker produced a cool finish to ensure a winning start to Hamlet's preparations ahead of the Ryman Premier Division programme as he rounded the keeper to settle the contest.
Dulwich's next friendly is at Beckenham Town on Tuesday.
