The media round-up from the last week

The media round-up from the last week

Here's what our papers have been saying...

First of all, the match report from last Sunday's 'Non League Paper':

Hamlet made an impressive start to the season as goals from new signing Calum Willock and Damian Scannell, who grabbed two, overcame visiting Canvey.
Willock put Hamlet ahead inside three minutes when he latched onto a sublime pass from Ashley Carew to slot past keeper Jake Larkins.
The Gulls threatened on occasions, with Ethan Pinnock's tackle denying Jay Curran and keeper Phil Wilson saving well from Ozzy Adeniji.
Scannell doubled Hamlet's lead five minutes before half-time when he peeled off his marker to head home an in-swinging corner from Carew.
Dulwich missed several chances after the interval.
Willock headed over when it appeared easier to score, Carew miscued a chip over the keeper and Nyren Clunis was twice denied by Larkins' agility.
At the other end, Wilson saved well from Martin Tuohy and Matt Drage bravely blocked the follow-up.
Scannell was on the end of every Dulwich attack during the closing stages.
He had one effort spectacularly cleared off the line by Steve Sheehan before adding a third goal in the 90th minute after Larkins spilled a low cross from Kristian Campbell.
Scannell later had the ball in the net again but was denied his hat-trick by an offside flag.
STAR MAN: Matt Drage (Dulwich Hamlet)

On Tuesday the midweek copy of the 'South London Press' also covered the Canvey opener:

New boys Willock and Scannell star as Dulwich get off to a flyer

New Dulwich signings Damian Scannell and Calum Willock were both on target as Gavin Rose's men won their opening Ryman League Premier Division match 3-0 against Canvey Island at Champion Hill.
Willock's debut goal came just two minutes into the game, rolling the ball into an empty net after lifting it over the keeper following a through ball from Ashley Carew.
Scannell headed in Carew's corner for 2-0 shortly before half-time and got his second in the final minute of the 90 when he was first to the rebound from substitute Kristian Campbell's shot. The win leaves Dulwich top after one game.
Willock and Scannell were two of five Dulwich debutants in the starting line-up with Osei Sankofa, Mitchell Nelson and Danny Waldren also making their bows.
Dulwich visit newly-promoted Merstham tonight.

Yesterday the weekly 'Southwark News' continued with the Canvey victory:

Scannell double bags Hamlet opening points

A brace of goals from new Dulwich striker Damien Scannell helped Hamlet get their season off to a perfect start at Champion Hill on Saturday.
The ex-Bromley frontman scored just before half-time and in the final minute of the game as Dulwich brushed aside their opposition from Essex.
The home side came out of the blocks quickly at the weekend and were ahead after just three minutes when Calum Willock, also making his competitive Dulwich debut, opened the scoring.
Hamlet were rarely troubled before Scannell got his first goal with a thumping header and Dulwich spent most of the second period on the front foot before the 30-year-old nabbed his second of the day as time ticked away.
On Tuesday night against Merstham the Pink and Blues picked up their second win of the season thanks to a 2-0 victory away from home.
As last weekend Willock and Scannell bagged the goals, one each on this occasion, which maintained Dulwich's good start to the season.
This Saturday Dulwich travel to north London side Hendon for their latest Ryman Premier League outing a game that commences at 3pm.
Next Tuesday the Pink and Blues play their first cup encounter of this campaign when Thamesmead Town visit Champion Hill, kick off 7.45pm, in the Robert Dyas League Cup.

And, lastly, earlier today there was this coverage in the weekend edition of the 'South London Press':

WILL POWER

The signings of Calum Willock and Osei Sankofa have raised the average age of a traditionally young Dulwich Hamlet.
Striker Willock, 33, and defender Sankofa, 30, have both enjoyed long professional careers and their experience could tip the balance in Dulwich's favour as the South Londoners bid for promotion from the Ryman League Premier Division this season.
The former's signing came thanks to him knowing fellow former pro Kevin James, who is a Dulwich player-coach.
He played for Hamlet in a pre-season friendly win against Beckenham Town before he had even trained with Gavin Rose's squad, scoring twice in a 5-0 win. He netted again in a 2-1 victory against Hayes & Yeading a few days later.
His competitive career with Gavin Rose's side could not have started much better either.
He scored early on in the 3-0 opening day win against Canvey Island, latching onto a throughball and lifting over the keeper before rolling into an empty net.
Then on Tuesday, he was in the right place at the right time as Damian Scannell's centre bounced in off him. Dulwich beat Merstham 2-0.
"Me and Kevin first spoke towards the end of last season but nothing more came of it at the time," Willock said. "But then we spoke again in pre-season and I knew they were looking for another forward. I did well in the friendlies so we spoke a bit more about me signing. It's all been really positive so far. Dulwich are known for having a talented young side but they've added a couple more senior players this summer, which can only be a good thing as there is a healthy balance and blend of the squad. I believe I can help with my experience. When I was a young player the older lads used to give me feedback about how I got on and where I could improve. If anyone wants to come to me for advice I'm happy to help them. I like to think I get on well with people."
As a targetman, Willock joins Jacob Erskine and Charlie Penny in boosting Dulwich's frontline-a position where Rose was keen to add. He said last week that having more clinical players to convert the chances they create could be worth another 15-20 points a season-possibly enough to get them up as champions.
"I knew they were a team up there season after season and they play good football," Willock said. "No matter where you are on the pitch you need to be able to play. I can be an effective target man-if people play the ball into me I can hold it up to bring team-mates into play or create chances for myself. I have my own personal targets but I want to keep them to myself. I know the club want to get promoted and I believe that's realistic. There are more senior players here now who have been in similar situations and that could make the difference."
Rose admitted that Willock's start could not have gone much better, highlighting the immediate improvement he has made to Dulwich's scoring exploits.
"His goals have been examples of the types of chances we've not converted in the past in terms of anticipating a ball that might not get all the way through to the keeper-like on Saturday-or getting across the six-yard box like on Tuesday. We get these types of chances year on year but never finished them. He gives us that now."
Dulwich visit Hendon in the league tomorrow. The hosts are also unbeaten but have drawn a game.
Erskine is back in training and Albert Jarrett returns from suspension.
"We've had a couple of young lads on the bench but this gives us more senior options," Rose said. "We've started really well for the last few years but it doesn't make a difference to us-early season form doesn't count for much. But it can set a platform to challenge at the end of the year and that's what we are trying to do."
Another boost for Rose is Dean Lodge re-signing for the club. Like Willock, the winger's move is being funded by the 12th-man scheme.
"Dean has not had a large amount of games because he has been unlucky with injuries," Rose said. "We need to get a good run out of him. His career with us has been stop-start but he has a lot of ability."
