The sports pages from the last fortnight
Here we have the round-up from the non-league columns in the papers...
Two weeks of news to catch up on, apologies for the delay. Firstly, the person who re-types the reports was busy in the run-up to our 'Pay What You Like' match; then after that he had a bit of cold to shrug off....excuses, excuses!
Anyway, here goes...
A fortnight ago was FA Cup weekend, where we went down to Whitehawk in the second qualifying round by four goals to two. Here's what the 'Non League Paper' had to say about that the day after:
MILLS' TRIPLE HALTS HAMLETWhitehawk striker Danny Mills scored a superb hat-trick as the Hawks edged out Dulwich Hamlet.
In truth, the Hawks could and probably should have scored more than their four against their Ryman Premier opposition, but Mills' third in added time killed the game off for Steve King's side.
Sam Deering opened the scoring from the penalty spot after the impressive Mills was hauled down by keeper Phil Wilson who was only booked for committing the foul.
Despite that, Hamlet drew level only five minutes later when Kevin James finished well when one on one with Craig Ross.
Juan Cruz Gotta then saw an effort brilliantly saved by Wilson, before Mills scored his first with a bullet header from Deering's corner.
Mills added his second to put the Hawks 3-1 up 12 minutes into the second half, as he headed home Deering's floated ball into the area.
To their credit, Gavin Rose's side never gave up-and set up a nervous finale as Carew converted a penalty after Bryan Van Den Bogaert fouled substitute Dean McDonald. But with time running out and Hamlet pushing forward in search of an equaliser, Hawks broke and Sergio Torres. through ball played in Mills, whose great strike beat Wilson and went in off the post to seal victory for King's men.
Two days after that report the midweek 'South London Press' also concentrated on our exit:
Dulwich Hamlet ousted from FA Cup after defeat to Conference side WhitehawkDulwich Hamlet are out of the FA Cup after losing 4-2 to Whitehawk.
Sam Deering gave the National League side an early lead when he found the net from the penalty spot after keeper Phil Wilson was judged to have fouled Danny Mills in the box.
Kevin Wilson brought Dulwich level with a close range finish in the 25th minute. Whitehawk pushed forward in search of a goal but they were left frustrated as Wilson pulled off two good saves. But the hosts retook the lead again when Mills headed the ball in the net from a corner. He then made it 3-1 in the 57th minute when his header looped over Wilson.
Ashley Carew's shot was deflected over the bar following a good cross from Danny Waldren.
The visitors were back in the game when Carew scored a penalty with 15 minutes to go after Damian Scannell was fouled in the box.
Dulwich pushed forward in search of an equaliser but they were caught on the break in added time as Mills' cross-shot completed his hat-trick. Gavin Rose's side visit Met Police tonight.
The next write-up from two weeks ago was the weekly edition of the 'Southwark News', which was published on the Thursday, the headline also concentrating on our defeat down on the south coast:
Hawks end Hamlet FA Cup interestDulwich Hamlet went out of the FA Cup on Saturday after falling to a 4-2 defeat away against Conference South side Whitehawk FC.
The Brighton based club took the lead in the ninth minute at the weekend when Sam Deering converted a spot kick, after Hamlet keeper Phil Wilson was deemed to have felled striker Danny Mills.
However Kevin James levelled things up five minutes later before Mills scored just before the break to give the home side the lead.
Mills went on to score the second of his three goals just before the hour mark before Ashley Carew brought Hamlet back into the game with fifteen minutes left on the clock.
But Mills bagged the match ball in injury time when he netted his third of the game to send the south coast side through to the next round of the competition.
Hamlet were back in league action on Tuesday night against Met Police, again away from home, and Carew scored twice as Dulwich got back to winning ways.
Jacob Erskine netted the other goal in a 3-1 win that lifted Dulwich to third place in the Ryman Premier League.
This weekend Hamlet take on VCD Athletic, 3pm kick off, at Champion Hill and fans will be asked to pay what they want on the turnstiles.
As on the last occasion Dulwich operated this entry system two charities benefited from funds raised on the day.
This time local mental health group Cooltan Arts and the British Heart Foundation will be the beneficiaries of Hamlet supporters generosity.
Next Tuesday Dulwich play Staines Town at home in the Alan Turvey trophy, a game that starts at 7.45pm.
And so to the final report from that week, from the weekend copy of the 'South London Press', which concentrated on our 'Pay What You Like' match ,as well as our Black History Month launch:
Hamlet let fans decide entry fee for VCD gameDulwich Hamlet's match against VCD Athletic tomorrow sees supporters pay what they like-with all the profits split between two charities.
The same event last year saw a crowd of 2,856 with over £6,000 raised.
This year's proceeds will go to Cooltan Arts-the club's official charity partner-and the British Heart Foundation.
Hamlet go into the match having ended a three-game winless streak as a double from Ashley Carew and a goal from Jacob Erskine secured a 3-1 success at Met Police.
"We're a community-based club and always try to look at the bigger picture-not just football on the pitch," said Rose. "I buy into that. We realise there are issues in society that we need to be aware of and raise awareness of it. I'm really proud to be manager of a club that do things outside the box. Credit to all the people in the boardroom and the owners. Last year we centred on gay and homophobic awareness and this year it is black history- Dulwich has had quite a lot of black players in the last 30 years playing an active role. The club are trying to give some appreciation and acknowledgement of that, which is great."
This weekend's match will also see the launch of the club's Black History Exhibition at 1pm. It will showcase achievements of past and present players over Dulwich's 122-year history.
Nyren Clunis is a current player to be featured in the exhibition.
Rose said: "He has gone over the 250-game mark and is only in his early 20s-it's an unbelievable feat for such a young man. He is unfortunate not to play at a higher level. He is more than capable of that and I wouldn't put it beyond him still moving up the leagues-he has got great determination and a real will to achieve."
Dulwich handed a debut to left-back Jordan Brown, signed from Whitehawk, in their win against Met Police. "Kristian Campbell has been injured and won't be back for another month," said Rose. "We've been playing players in an area that wasn't their position-which hampered us and also hampered their performance. Jordan id a permanent signing. He'd only played once this season and it was a bit of a risk putting him in straight away. But we watched him in training and thought he looked good enough. We are still looking at one or two more additions to the squad and there will be a knock-on that we'll need to move one or two on."
Hamlet have fresh injury headaches for the VCD fixture as Kevin James came off after just six minutes with a hamstring strain. Substitute Dean McDonald picked up a problem in the same area but managed to stay on the pitch.
And so on to the round-up from the last seven days...last Sunday this was the report from our VCD game in the 'Non League Paper':
Jacob Erskine scored twice as Dulwich went nap in front of a near-2,000 crowd at Champion Hill against bottom-of-the-table VCD.
The visitors battled till the end, however, and grabbed two late goals to make the score more respectable.
Hamlet were quickly into their stride and took the lead with less than three minutes played as Erskine fastened on to Damian Scannell's chested pass and slipped the ball past the advancing Callum Thomas.
Rhys Murrell-Williamson and Erskine went close before the latter volleyed home a cross from the former on 31 minutes.
Three minutes later, Mitchell Nelson headed home a corner to give Hamlet a 3-0 interval lead.
There were near-misses at both ends before Dulwich eventually scored a fourth in the 73rd minute, when Murrell-Williamson netted a left-foot screamer from 20 yards.
Eighteen-year-old substitute Josh Fernandes added a fifth on 79 minutes, following up after Thomas blocked from Scannell.
Seven minutes from time, VCD's Aaron Wickham rounded off a neat move to reduce the arrears and then, in the 90th minute, Nathan Koranteng took advantage of some sloppy defending to net a scond.
And so to the most recent midweek 'South London Press', from last Tuesday, which also covered the big victory over VCD:
Five-star Dulwich back on song thanks to Erskine and coJacob Erskine's brace fired Dulwich Hamlet up to third in the Ryman League Premier Division as he inspired the South Londoners to a 5-2 victory over VCD Athletic on Saturday.
Erskine struck twice in the opening 31 minutes, first slotting home from Damian Scannell's pass with less than three minutes on the clock before volleying home after good approach play between Jordan Brown and Rhys Murrell-Williamson.
Mitchell Nelson headed in Ashley Carew's corner to leave Gavin Rose's side cruising at the break. Murrell-Williamson added a fourth on 74 minutes before youngster Josh Fernandes grabbed his first goal for the Hamlet. A late rally from the visitors saw them net two late consolations.
Dulwich's pay-what-you-like offer attracted 1,961 fans to Champion Hill, with the profits being split between the British Heart Foundation and Cooltan Arts-the club's official charity partner.
Dulwich host Staines Town in the League Cup tonight.
Our penultimate catch-up local report is from the 'Southwark News', which came out on Thursday just gone. And again, the VCD match made the headlines:
Erskine at the double against VCDA brace of goals from Jacob Erskine set Dulwich Hamlet on the path to a 5-2 home win against VCD Athletic on Saturday.
VCD are yet to win a league game this season and the Champion Hill side were in no mood to hand them a victory, pouring more misery on the team who sit at the bottom of the Ryman Premier table.
by the 31 minute mark Erskine had bagged both of the goals he scored on the day, which Mitchell Nelson, Rhys Murrell-Williamson and Josh Fernandes added to before the final whistle.
Aaron Wickham and Nathan Koranteng scored a couple of late consolation goals for VCD, but by this point the game had been well won by Dulwich.
On Tuesday night Hamlet were in League Cup action against Staines Town at Champion Hill and a last minute penalty from Ashley Carew secured a 2-1 victory.
James Mascoll scored Hamlet's other goal on the night, an equaliser after Prince M'bengui had put the visitors ahead.
This Saturday the Pink and Blues are on their travels as they take on Farnborough Town, 3pm kick off, in a Ryman Premier League encounter.
They follow that up with another league encounter next Tuesday, a 7.45pm start, at Champion Hill when Met Police come to the Southwark side.
And, last but not least, to yesterday's weekend edition of the 'South London Press', with one of our strikers heading to Merstham making the headline:
Penny is loose change for time being and makes loan switchDulwich Hamlet boss Gavin Rose confirmed Charlie Penny's three-month loan to fellow Ryman Premier Division side Merstham to give him much-needed game time.
Penny arrived at Champion Hill this summer but has found pitch time limited thanks to the goalscoring form of fellow new recruits Callum Willock and Jacob Erskine.
"He needs a run of games that we couldn't guarantee him," Rose said. "He is still a young developing player. He has a good pedigree as a goalscorer as he was a teenager at Millwall, but the competition for places is great. If you aren't getting opportunities as a young player, you might stagnate and we don't want to do that to anyone. He has also missed chunks of the season through injury so hasn't been able to get up and running. We've always only had one centre-forward and at times even had to play someone out of position. We wanted to strengthen because all the pressure was on one person and that's not fair. It's great that we are now in a position where we can send someone out."
Hamlet progressed to the next round of the League Cup-the Alan Turvey Trophy- thanks to a 2-1 win over Staines Town at Champion Hill on Tuesday.
Jamie Mascoll cancelled the visitors' opener before half-time, with Ashley Carew netting from the spot deep into stoppage time after Willock was felled.
Rose's men are away to Farnborough in the Ryman League Premier Division tomorrow. Dean McDonald, Nyren Clunis, Albert Jarrett, Jack Dixon and Kristian Campbell all remain sidelined.
