THIS EVENING’S MATCH PREVIEW - HARROW BOROUGH (AWAY) KO 7.45PM
Time to say hello to Harrow again as Dulwich Hamlet travel to Earlsmead for a rearranged Ryman League fixture.
Just three weeks and a bit after Dulwich’s comprehensive, if a little under par, 3-0 win away to Harrow Borough in the FA Trophy, the path to the promotion wends its way back to North London. Then a drilled early goal from Nyren Clunis, a Damian Scannell spot kick and Dean McDonald’s last minute sledgehammer finish ensured Dulwich Hamlet progressed through in that competition.
That exit left Borough with only the county cups and taking nervous glances over their shoulders at an increasingly fraught fight at the wrong end of the table. That battle stave off the spectre of relegation rumble began well enough with a 4-1 tonking of Lewes the Saturday following FA Trophy exit. A Marc Charles-Smith goal set the Boro’ on their way midway through the first half with Michael Bryan doubling the advantage close to the interval. Josh Webb provoked Lewes laments as he made it 3-0 on 70 minutes, a fourth put away by Charles-Smith five minutes later. Though Alex Laing brought a little light into Lewes hearts with a goal six minutes from time it was but a consolation as the Rooks sank ever closer to the wooden spoon spot.
Yet still Harrow were closer to the play-off places than the drop especially with the hangman’s noose already tightened around the necks of boracic Farnborough. However, with Conor Hubble and the much-travelled Cliff Akurang hitting the target for Billericay Town, the Boro lost vital on their rivals despite Fejiri Okenabirhie’s late, late goal setting up a nervy finish for the Essex Boys.
Last Saturday brought rock-bottom VCD Athletic to Earlsmead, surely a chance for the Boro’ to add some vital points to the stash. After all the Vickers had managed to snatch just a couple of points on their travels from Oakwood from ten previous outings. Yet the warnings from the VCD camp might have been ominous. FA Cup heroes Staines Town had been dumped out of the FA Trophy, defeat at home to Brentwood made harder to stomach after the loss of their ‘keeper in the warm-up with no alternative custodian to replace him. In defeat to the Hamlet in the Trophy VCD had proved troublesome opposition, oh and they came into the game on the back of a first league victory of the season at home to Farnborough. The writing was on the wall as early as the first minute when Richard Avery tucked away a rebound off Conor Hudnott’s to put the Vickers ahead, copious chances spurned for VCD to add more goals before Kojo Awotwi doubled their lead with 7 minutes left on the clock. It rather summed it up for Harrow that their late consolation goal came from a Joseph Bruce’s deflection into in his own net, a goal so late in the day it mattered not in the final outcome.
