This week's reports...
Time for our weekly round-up from the press
On Sunday, in the 'Non League Paper' there was a report on our Trophy match, that was clearly penned by a home correspondent!
PLUCKY HAMLET MISS GOLDEN CHANCEIt took the woodwork and a brilliant save two minutes from time by Iron keeper Sam Beasant to deny the Hamlet victory in this entertaining cup tie at Cressing Road.
After the home side dominated early on but had wasted several first half chances, including two apiece from strikers Michael Cheek and Jack Midson, the visitors took charge after the interval and caused the Iron all kinds of problems.
Four minutes after the restart, Ashley Carew struck the foot of an Iron post and from then on it was the visitors well in charge with Beasant pulling off a great save to deny substitute and ex-Iron player Ibra Sekajja a potential winner.
Hamlet boss Gavin Rose praised his players for "putting in a fantastic performance against a National League side" adding: "We could have won it in the second half but we're delighted to get them back at ours for a replay."
Meanwhile, Iron boss Hakan Hayrettin was disappointed his side failed to take their first half chances. He added: "We have to score when on top and be more clinical in front of goal and I know we had three shots cleared off their goal-line in the first half but that allowed them to put us under pressure in the second half which I expected. But it's a clean sheet and we're in the draw and with a job to do in Tuesday's replay."
The Iron dominated the first half exchanges and but for Hamlet keeper Preston Edwards and two goal line clearance from defenders the Iron would have come in at the break at least two if not three goals ahead.
But the second half was totally different as the Iron sat back more, the Ryman Premier side pushed on where had they been a bit more clinical in front of goal it could have been so different.
STAR MAN: Sam Beasant(Braintree)
ENTERTAINMENT: *** (out of a possible five stars)
This was followed by the midweek copy of the 'South London Press' on Tuesday:
Dulwich set for FA Trophy replayDulwich Hamlet get a second crack at knocking Braintree town out of the FA Trophy tonight.
The two clubs battled out a 0-0 draw on Saturday and that means a replay tonight at Champion Hill.
The South Londoners had chances to upset their National League opponents-not least when Ashley Carew struck a post.
Hamlet took control in the second half with Kenny Beaney and Ibrahim Kargbo dictating the flow. Braintree keeper Sam Beasant denying Carew while Nathan Green headed a good chance wide.
Dulwich number one Preston Edwards made a vital stop with his legs to frustrate Michael Cheek.
The Ryman League Premier Division outfit felt they had a strong penalty appeal when Gavin Tomlin won the ball off Chez Isaac and appeared to be pulled back.
Then came the replay! As well as the printed press there was more in-depth reporting from the Kentish Football website, which you can view by CLICKING HERE
And so on to Thursday, in the 'Southwark News':
Giant-killers reach last eightDulwich Hamlet produced a sensational performance to knock Braintree Town out of the FA Buildbase Trophy on Tuesday night.
After the sides drew 0-0 at Braintree on Saturday, Ashley Carew put Hamlet ahead in the 28th minute when he finished from the spot after Gavin Tomlin had been fouled.
National League Braintree, who included Millwall's Kris Twardek in their starting XI, rallied and Junior Okimo levelled seven minutes before the break.
The home side, seeking to reach the quarter-finals of the competition for the first time since 1980, delighted the majority of the 860 fans at Champion Hill with their positivity against a team two divisions above them.
And they were rewarded five minute into the second half when Manny Parry put through his own net.
Eleven minutes later Hamlet had a two-goal cushion as Tomlin made it 3-1, before Sanchez Ming added a fourth in the 78th minute.
Parry had more luck at the other end of the pitch as he reduced the deficit with two minutes left, but Jacob Erskine struck in injury-time as Gavin Rose's side comfortably advanced.
There was great coverage on this momentous win in today's weekend edition of the 'South London Press':
GIANT KILLERS DULWICHHamlet storm into FA Trophy quarter-final thanks to win over Vanarama outfit
Dulwich Hamlet marched into the last eight of the FA Trophy on Tuesday night-but boss Gavin Rose has placed more priority on tomorrow's trip to Bognor Regis Town.
The South Londoners are the lowest-ranked club left in the competition and will take on Vanarama National outfit Macclesfield Town at Champion Hill on February 25.
Dulwich knocked out Braintree Town-also two divisions higher than them-in midweek courtesy of an impressive 5-2 victory.
The danger is that Hamlet's run in the prestigious tournament will distract further from their promotion drive in the Ryman League Premier division.
They have slipped to ninth in the table and are five points behind fifth-placed Tonbridge angels, although do have a match in hand.
"To reach the quarter-finals is a terrific achievement," said Rose. "We haven't done as well as I would like in the FA competitions in the past. But this season we have started to make a mark and establish ourselves as a team who should be recognised in non-League. We're now playing one of the better teams in the pyramid, a club that recently went professional. But the fact we're playing at home gives us that little bit of familiarity and perhaps makes it slightly more uncomfortable for the. That hands us a bit more of an opportunity. When you first start in it you are looking to win the tie and not thinking too much about it. By this stage you begin to wonder how far you can go. But we have a really important game on Saturday, probably even more important than the Macclesfield one in my book, at Bognor. We've got a lot of work to do before that tie because the league is of paramount importance to us. Then we'll focus on Macclesfield-enjoy it and try to progress."
Dulwich already boast crowds that make them one of the biggest clubs outside the Vanarama National.
The visit of the Silkmen is set to produce another bumper gate.
"We had 860 there for Braintree-that was a great attendance for a Tuesday-night game," said Rose. "But with the next game being on a Saturday and against Macclesfield it will definitely exceed 2,000. That's what football is about, trying to get as far as you can and relishing those moments as well."
Dulwich took the lead against the run of play on 28 minutes when Gavin Tomlin was brought down and Ashley Carew sent Braintree keeper Sam Beasant the wrong way from the penalty spot.
But the visitors levelled things up before the interval as Jerome Okimo headed in from a corner.
A defensive error made it 2-1 to Dulwich on 50 minutes. Ibrahim Sekajja put Beasant under pressure and his kick came off Braintree defender Manny Parry and into the back of the net.
Former AFC Wimbledon striker Jack Midson saw his header kept out by Hamlet keeper Preston Edwards. Nathan Green struck a post at the other end.
Just past the hour mark, Tomlin held off a defender to race on to a long ball and bury past Beasant.
Braintree's Sean Clohessy was sent off for pulling back Tomlin in the 75th minute.
Sanchez Ming then produced a superb strike to ease Dulwich into a 4-1 lead.
Parry headed in a free-kick but Hamlet found a fifth goal deep into stoppage time.
Ming drove in a cross from the right and substitute Jacob Erskine nodded past Beasant.
"We started pretty slowly as a team," said Rose. "We started well for the first five or 10 minutes but then Braintree took the game to us for the majority of the half. We were lucky to go in at half-time at 1-1. In the second half we gave a great account of ourselves and looked the most likely to score. Gavin Tomlin was good all the way through the game. So was Ibrahim Kargbo. In the second half the individual performances got better and better. Nathan Green and Sanchez Ming, in particular, were very good."
Dulwich are boosted by the return of on-loan striker Dipo Akinyemi and Rhys Murrell-Williamson for this weekend's trip to Nyewood Lane-both were cup-tied against Braintree.
"That adds experience to fill our matchday squad," said Rose. "But I was delighted with Jacob the other night. He hasn't had a pre-season, he's only trained for a month trying to regain his fitness. We were short on numbers and he was familiar to us. Jacob was fantastic for 20 minutes on Tuesday night and scored. It just gives us more options."
