This weekend's match preview - Witham Town (Away)
The battle for playoff places tighter than ever, Dulwich are Essex bound to face Witham, facing struggles of their own at the wrong end of the table
Promoted through the playoffs from Division One North last term, Witham made a promising start to life in the Isthmian Premier but soon found themselves struggling near the foot of the table flirting with the relegation zone on a regular basis. Yet to look at their results in recent games they have proved themselves capable of mixing it with the big boys even if results have not gone in their favour and they should not be taken lightly.
Recent games have seen narrow single goal defeats against the likes of Leatherhead, Hendon, Kingstonian and East Thurrock, all clubs aspiring for promotion whilst their trip to Maidstone United’s on Valentine’s Day saw them gave membership of an exclusive club of five teams that have left the Gallagher Stadium undefeated.
The last of those defeats, away to East Thurrock last Saturday, dragged the Town back into the bottom four with a 2-1 loss despite Lewis Godbold giving them the lead 6 minutes before the interval. Unfortunately for them Sam Higgins rediscovered his scoring boots after a lean spell of late, bagging a brace to turn the scoreline on its head.
In what is becoming a very close battle, just two wins separate VCD Athletic, second bottom, from Hampton and Richmond Borough in 18th spot. With just five games left of the season the battle for the drop is every bit as intense as the scrap for promotion.
This Saturday’s game kicks off at 3.00 pm at The Village Glass Stadium, Spa Road, Witham, Essex CM8 1UN
