Time for a newspaper round-up

Time for a newspaper round-up

Back for 2017, we hope to carry our week-by-week Hamlet news from the printed press.

Hamlet committee member Mishi Morath said, apologetically:

"This is something I've been trying to do for several years, since I've had input onto our official website. Unfortunately I didn't get round to continuing to do so at the start of this season, and have neglected sharing what the newspapers have been saying, for those of our fans who don't see the local papers, or live abroad, for example. Hopefully the start of the new year will give me the impetus to try again..."

Last Sunday, the first of January, saw our home draw with Wingate & Finchley the featured Ryman League Premier Division clash in the 'Non League Paper':

HILL PARTY ENDS EARLY AS HAMLET COP CRASH

That's the thing about hosting New Year's Eve parties-there's always someone who gatecrashes it and drinks your parents' best bottle.
Wingate & Finchley were that guy as they pooped the big celebration of yet another bumper crowd at Dulwich Hamlet.
Almost 2,000 turned up expecting to see the Pink and Blue finish 2016 with a bang by posting a third successive win to aide their promotion quest.
But Shane Gore's second-half penalty save from substitute Danny Carr and resolute defending meant it was a point shared.
"Every club we seem to play gets disappointed when we take points off them," said Wingate & Finchley boss Keith Rowland, whose side are in the bottom half.
"Staines were exactly the same on Boxing Day-another good club who have come down from a good league. Dulwich are trying to get up to a good league. For me, to take a point against Staines and then a point here, that's ok for us. We've got a lot of games in hand through our cup run. But in a one-off game here today, I'll take the point."
Rowland's side got off to a great start when Reece Beckles-Richards turned in a corner from close range with three minutes on the clock.
Charlton loanee Chris Millar was denied by the legs of Gore as the hosts looked for a swift reply, which duly came on 21 minutes.
Nathan Green swung in a cross and Dumebi Dumaka rose high to power in the equaliser with his head.
Tommy Tejan-Sie almost restored Wingate's lead with a curling free-kick, while at the other end defender Matt Drage saw his flick headed off the line by Tanasheh Abrahams five minutes before the break.
But the excitement wasn't over and on 45 minutes Wingate had a penalty. Drage was adjudged to have barged Rob Laney over as they chased the ball. Former England C stopper Preston Edwards, however, was equal to captain Steve Wales' low spot-kick.
Not to be outdone in the goalie stakes, Gore immediately produced a fingertip save to deny Drage at the end of a frantic opening period. Then he kept out the important one from 12 yards on 58 minutes.
Carr raced into the area, chopped back but was taken down by Ryan Sellers' sliding challenge. Carr grabbed the ball but, like Wales, his low effort from the spot was saved.
Luke Ifill was a relieved man when his sliced clearance went behind for a corner. But despite Dulwich enjoying the pressure, Wingate held on.

All three of the Hamlet matches over the holiday period were featured in yesterday's edition of the 'Southwark News':

Friend becomes foe in Dulwich win

Dumebi Dumaka came back to haunt his old club over Christmas, as Dulwich Hamlet won 2-0 at struggling Grays Athletic.
Dumaka returned from injury to net on his former stomping ground, opening the scoring in the 51st minute, before Nyren Clunis added the gloss late on.
Dulwich were in control and almost took the lead after three minutes, but nobody could convert Clunis' cross.
The two goal-scorers combined just before the half-hour mark, with Dumaka slotting in, the goal was disallowed for offside.
Hamlet peppered the Grays goal with more efforts as the first half continued, but they could not find a way past Amadou Tangara, meaning that the two sides went in at the break goalless.
It didn't take long for the visitors to nudge themselves ahead in the second half, however, as just six minutes in, the pressure finally told as Dumaka shrugged off his marker and fired home.
The chances kept on coming, most notably from the boot of Danny Carr, but the game wasn't made safe until the final minute, when Clunis picked up on a loose ball and doubled the lead.

Penalty woe for Hamlet
A bumper crowd of 1,910 packed into Champion Hill Stadium on New Year's Eve as Dulwich Hamlet took on Wingate and Finchley.
In the only changes from the victory at Grays Athletic, Gavin Rose gave a start to Charlton loanee Chris Millar and restored Ibra Sekajja to the starting eleven. Danny Carr and Ibrahim Kargbo dropped to the bench.
The atmosphere fell flat after just three minutes, as the visitors took the lead. A Wingate corner failed to be cleared, which allowed Reece Beckles-Richards to slot the ball home and open the scoring.
Millar and Dumebi-Dumaka had chances to level almost instantly but failed, however, in the 21st minute, Hamlet were back on terms.
A looping cross that took all the speed off the ball was sent into the Finchley area and Dumebi-Dumaka, having to generate all the power himself, headed home for his second in consecutive games.
Efforts on goal were traded as both sides looked to move back in front, but right on half-time, the visitors were awarded a penalty, after Matt Drage was adjudged to have brought down Rob Laney.
Preston Edwards, however, was to play the part of hero, as he got down low to save Steve Wales' spot-kick and keep the scores level.
On the hour mark, Hamlet had a penalty of their own to contend with, after substitute Danny Carr was tripped in the box.
Carr dusted himself down and took the kick, but his weak effort was saved.
Chances were at a premium in the second half otherwise, meaning that both teams had to settle for a draw to close out 2016.Beaney gets Hamlet's year off to ideal start

Depleted Dulwich Hamlet secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over struggling Hendon to kick off 2017 on Bank Holiday Monday.
With hot shots Dumebi-Dumaka and Danny Carr ruled out, there was a timely return from suspension for Gavin Tomlin.
Hamlet had the early chances through Tomlin and Ashley Carew, but failed to find a way past Tom Lovelock in the Hendon goal - until the 25th minute.
Marc Weatherstone found room for a cross, which made its way to Ibra Sekajja. His header was initially saved by Lovelock, but the rebound was turned in by Carew to open the soring.
Hamlet had further chances to extend their lead during the remainder of the first half, but went in at the break just one goal to the good.
The relegation-threatened visitors attempted to get into the game as the second half
begun, but Dulwich continued to pile on the pressure, missing a gilt-edged chance to double the lead through Tomlin.
The second goal did come, however, just past the hour mark.
A Carew free-kick was blocked by the Hendon wall, but the ball fell to Beaney, who thrashed a low shot past Lovelock, sending the majority of the 1,146 fans inside Champion Hill into raptures.
Hendon made life difficult for the home side, though, as hesitant defending allowed Reiss Stanislaus the chance to thump a cross-shot past Preston Edwards and in off the far post via a deflection in the 71st minute to halve the deficit.
Hamlet, however, held on for the three points to move up to fourth position on the Ryman Premier League table.

And, finally, for our newly revived weekly round-up, we look at the coverage of the 'South London Press', which hit the news stands earlier today:

Don't expect Island adventure to be an easy ride, says Rose

Dulwich Hamlet boss Gavin Rose has warned his side against complacency as they travel to Ryman Premier Division strugglers Canvey Island tomorrow.
The South Londoners, who defeated Hendon 2-1 in their first match of 2017 on Monday, head to the Prospect Stadium having lost only one of their past 13 games in the league.
Ashley Carew and Kenny Beaney netted for Hamlet, who suffered a 2-1 defeat to the Gulls when they played the Essex team in the league in August. Since then a string of poor results have seen the Gulls drop down the table and they are joint bottom with struggling Grays Athletic.
"We are confident as a team, but we cannot take our game against Canvey for granted," said rose. "All the teams in the league are capable of beating each other, so our job will be to go down there, be professional and show we are several places above Canvey in the league, rather than expect to beat them easily. We were really good against Hendon. We passed the ball well and played well as a unit and team. We created many chances and the final 2-1 scoreline flattered Hendon. If we play like this more consistently we will be there or thereabouts in terms of the play-off places. We've had only one loss in 12 games in all competitions and we're starting to get that winning mentality which is what we need here. Our players are buying into this, which is good for morale. I've always believed that we're good enough to finish top of this division and the players are starting to believe as well."
While injury issues have been a problem for the South Londoners in recent weeks, Rose is cautiously optimistic that his side will be able to cope.
"I'm hoping we don't pick up any more injuries as we continue our run-in of games," Rose added. "This is a tough period but hopefully we'll get everyone back fully fit. If there are options out there that are better than what we have, we will strengthen the squad."
Hamlet are not back in league action after this weekend until January 21 as they have a home Ryman Cup tie against Faversham Town on Tuesday followed by a trip to Whitehawk next Saturday in the FA Trophy.
