Top award for a top school
Goodrich Community Primary School, with many of their pupils being Hamlet fans, have won a local sporting award.
The school has been recognised by the London PE & School Sports Network works with every primary, secondary and special school in Southwark delivering 5 main areas of work: PE & School Sport, Leadership, Teacher Training, Health & Wellbeing and SEND.
Last year they decided to split the borough into 7 areas to create a mini league in each area. The areas are Dulwich & Nunhead, Camberwell, Peckham, Walworth, Borough & Bankside, Rotherhithe and Bermondsey.
Schools were awarded points for things like attending competitions & leagues, training students to become leaders, attending teacher insets and training days, running in school programmes such as health & wellbeing and gifted & talented and having SEN support during PE lessons.
In Dulwich & Nunhead alone there are 14 schools and Goodrich were their top sporting school. Throughout the year they entered 28 sports competitions as well as attending lots of insets and running school programmes.
It's no surprise really that Goodrich have such a sporting pedigree, as one of their most famous sporting alumni is none other than our very own legendary star from yesteryear...Edgar Kail! He was an England schoolboy international when a pupil there just over a century ago, and was already a stand-out sporting all-rounder in their football, cricket & swimming teams.
Their success today is in no small way thanks to another former Hamlet player, their PE Coordinator being none other than former Jamaican international Lennie Dennis, who had a spell wearing our Pink & blue too, in the Eighties, where he was affectionately known as 'Spock'. [Look at his ears kids!]
Goodrich Community Primary School are just one of the many local educational establishments that have taken up our 'Free tickets for Schools' initiative, that is organised by George Parnavelas, the Schools lead on the Dulwich Hamlet Football Committee. If you want your kids' school, or if you teach in one, and would like complimentary tickets for your school-or even kids sports team-for an upcoming Hamlet match then simply drop George an email at:
Said George:
"It's great to see Goodrich get some recognition. They have really got behind our community ticking initiatives over the last few seasons, and I've seen first hand what a sport-loving bunch of kids they are, so well done to them on winning the award."
