Tuesday: Welling United vs Dulwich Hamlet

Tuesday: Welling United vs Dulwich Hamlet

We make the short trip to Welling on Tuesday night as we return to action in the National League South

After the excitement of Friday night’s FA First Round game against Carlisle United, Dulwich Hamlet return to League action tonight against Welling United at 7.45pm.

Welling are our closest neighbours in the division and their Park View Road ground is familiar territory for a number of our current players. David Ijaha, Richard Orlu, Danny Mills, Dom Vose, Quade Taylor, Jeffrey Monakana and Ade Yusuff have all turned out for the Wings at one time or another.

Meanwhile, Welling’s Magnus Okuonghae, Sanchez Ming, Jay Rich-Baghuelou, Nathan Green, Anthony Cook and Danny Waldren have all featured for Dulwich down the years.

Dulwich are currently in 16th in the table, while Welling sit in 19th.

Striker Danny Mills spoke to us ahead of tonight’s game and was relishing the opportunity to face his former club.

Firstly, Mills touched on the magnitude of Friday’s televised game against Carlisle. “I think now that the dust has settled from Friday, on reflection and having watched it back, I think that as a group of players, we can be very proud of the performance that we gave,” he said. “Before the game, we spoke as a group and we said regardless of the scoreline, we just need to go out there and play our hearts out and give a performance that not only the fans would be proud of but also our friends, our families and those watching on the TV at home.”

“It was a great experience for each and every player that was involved. For me personally, it was an absolute honour to lead the boys out in such a big game and a privilege to play in such a big game for Dulwich Hamlet. I thought that we played really well. I think the scoreline flattered them a little bit.”

“We had a lot of possession, especially in the first half, but just couldn't find that cutting edge in the final third. But like I said, we've done ourselves no harm with the performance and it's something that we can build on going into the game against Welling.”

Turning his attention to tonight’s game, Mills said, “I know that they're not in the position that they want to be in. I frequently talk to one of the coaches down there Osei Sankofa, who was a former Dulwich player as well, and we have a lot of catch ups and talks about how they're getting on. I think it’s a big game for both clubs.”

“We haven't won a game for a while in the League and neither have they, so it's got the makings of potentially a very good game. Now that the euphoria of the FA Cup is over, we get back to our bread and butter and that's trying to get three points in the League. We can focus on what we need to do and now we want to start climbing, climbing, climbing the division.”

“I had some good times at Welling last year, obviously we got to the Playoff Final. It's a good club with good fans and good people that work really hard behind the scenes and I'm really looking forward to going back and seeing some old faces, and looking forward to seeing some players that I know as well from Welling.”

“Gavin McCallum, obviously Anthony Cook who I know quite well and was at Dulwich last season. Bradley Goldberg, Adam Coombes. So they've got some really good players and their squad doesn't really reflect their League position, so this isn't going to be an easy game. We're really going to have to work hard to earn the right but hopefully if we can put in half as good a performance as we what we did on Friday, I'd like to think that we'll come away from Park View Road with some points.”
