We managed to have a quick word with Gavin Rose

We managed to have a quick word with Gavin Rose

He stopped for a chat following the Youth Team game yesterday morning.

I hope you're not in too bad a mood following the youngsters 3-0 defeat just now in their League Cup semi-final. Is it still ok to chat?

"Yes, of course. Corinthian have been a good team over the years, when we've come up against them in cup competition. They've got a good youth policy there & are deserved winners. I wish them all the best in the final."

So to First Team matters. That was a good win yesterday at Faversham Town. Some supporters are of the opinion that we are grinding out results. But that's more imprtant at this stage than playing quality football, I would have thought...

"It might look that way, but the players are doing an honest job for the Club. A few are carrying injuries too. Some of these guys have an immense will to succeed."

So how much petrol is there left in the tank? Are we running on fumes?

"We may well be, but we just have to keep on working within our resources. If that was the only reason we lost out, due to resources, then that would be easier to take, rather than the squad just not performing. But at this stage, we didn't expect the run in to be easy & I still have belief in my players, and they believe in themselves."

We have the Isthmian League Cup Final on Tuesday. Are you looking forward to it, or is it a distraction at this point? And how will it feel to be underdogs?

"Underdogs to who? We're certainly not underdogs! We are going there to win. I'm not concerned about what others might think just because they're in the Premier Division. What others think doesn't get in the way of the fact that it's silverware at stake, and we're looking to win it for the Club & the supporters who have been so vocal in backing us all season. The fans will play their part at Maidstone, i have no doubt."

And then to Saturday. Home to strugglers Walton Casuals. An easy three points on paper, but a potential banana skin?

"Yes, I would never say we can claim three points off of any side, at any stage of the season, but certainly not at this stage. They are fighting for their life at the bottom of the league and will definitely have their own agenda. They have some good players who we know about, and are more than capable of causing us problems on the day."

And then it's the re-arrangement at Leatherhead, when we could have had the points in the bag, but for the ludicrous abandonment. Clearly our boys will be fired up. How hard will it be for them to concentrate on their job that night, head over heart, having already been robbed of the points, so to speak?

"Of course we were hard done by, by that's history now. But that won't help us get the result we want, so you won't get that attitude from me. We have to go there and win, there's no point feeling sorry for ourselves. I won't encourage that mentality and I am sure the team will be totally focused on the job in hand, & won't have it either."
