What the papers said
Time for our weekly look at what's in the sportspages of our local newspapers
On Tuesday it was The Hamlet who grabbed the headline in the non-league column of the midweek edition of the 'South London Press':
Dulwich well-placed for title charge
Dulwich Hamlet took advantage of a slip-up by league-leaders Maidstone United by beating Merstham 4-1 in the Ryman Premier League Division One South. The Hamlet are now four points behind Maidstone, who drew 2-2 with Folkestone Invicta on Saturday, but have three games in hand. Daniel Carr opened the scoring for Dulwich from the spot, then a strike from Xavier Vidal and a brace from Nyren Clunis secured the points before Merstham grabbed a late consolation at Champion Hill.
Moving on two days later, which was yesterday, news of the Club meeting about the ground dominated the weekly 'Southwark News' coverage:
Hamlet want new Dulwich lease beyond 2015
Dulwich Hamlet Football Club are currently in negotiations to extend the lease on their home ground Champion Hill beyond 2015 before it's sold to new owners.
Whilst the club itself is not in asministration their previous landlords, DHPD Ltd, are and the land freeholders and effectively current landlords, Northfleet Ltd, are looking to sell the ground to interested parties.
The club's lease on Champion Hill expires in 2015 and they are keen to have a extended agreement in place before the ground changes hands again.
Yasmine Dawson, General Manager at the club, said: "We want the sale to include Dulwich with a very long lease which is why we are having talks with the current freeholders. We have a good relationship with them and we want to move away from the past reputation of the club."
She added: "We don't want just five years again we want more. We want as much as we can, we need to show due diligence financially as the freeholders have had bad experiences with Dulwich in the past. We have to deal with that and it is difficult. We have been told if we are financially doing what we are supposed to be doing and running the business as we should be then we will be fine."
A fans meeting was hosted by members of the club board, including Ms Dawson, on Saturday night at Champion Hill to reassure them they won't be left without a base. "I have confidence that the ground won't be built on as potential buyers are not there to get the freehold on that section of the land, they are interested in the car park." Ms Dawson said. "That is what the interested parties have said."
She went on to state that she hoped the meeting eliminated any fears the club is moving ground, and the club feel the existence of a covenant on Champion Hill will ensure their future in the immediate area even if the freehold passes to new people.
The decision on what extension Hamlet gets beyond 2015 is expected to take weeks rather than months the News understands.
Eddie Muraszko, from the Dulwich Hamlet Supporters' Trust, hopes the clubs new open approach about its future continues.
He said: " Firstly it's important to thank the club for finally explaining the situation to the supporters directly, after months of rumours. The big turnout was a mark of how much interest there is in the club's future and it was notable that there was some interesting ideas from the fans-including the suggestion of splitting the freehold between the areas that could or couldn't be developed easily. However the fact is that the club's future at Champion Hill is very uncertain- the lease has only a couple of years to run and decisions about the club's ground appear to to be out of its hands. The Supporters' Trust will be looking into what course of action would best secure the future of the club in East Dulwich, and look forward to the club communicating more as matters develop."
Below this article was the match report for our win over Merstham:
Clunis on double for Hamlet
A Nyren Clunis second half brace of goals put the seal on a Dulwich performance on Saturday that oozed composure and class as they continued their promotion push.
The winger was a thorn in the Merstham side all afternoon at Champion Hill with his direct running at pace being eye catching amongst a number of high level performances from the young Hamlet side.
The victory sees Dulwich remain in second spot of the Ryman League south table, but with nearest rivals Leatherhead and Maidstone both picking up draws on Saturday Dulwich will go top if they win their games in hand.
Clunis was central to the opening goal on 13 minutes at the weekend when a lazy tackle just inside the Merstham box saw him tripped resulting in a spot kick.
Striker Daniel Carr made no mistake with the resultant penalty and Hamlet were up and running and never looked likely to lose.
Teenage central midfielder Xavier Vidal also caught the eye against Merstham before he scored a screamer of a goal on 40 minutes.
Vidal had hit both posts from a dead ball earlier in the half before the visitors backed off him just too much five minutes before the break.
The youngster took the invite to shoot from 25 yards and his dipping shot left keeper Lloyd Anderson grabbing at air.
Vidal was central to much of the good play on Saturday maintaining a composed head at all times and picking out effective simple passes when needed.
In the second period Clunis came to the forefront of the contenst bagging two goals to cap off an excellent all round showing.
The wide man was lingering at the back post on 64 minutes to sidefoot home a fine low cross, and 20 minutes from the end he cut in from the left wing onto his favoured right foot and drilled a shot past Anderson.
Hamlet's foot came off the pedal somewhat after that abd Mark Nwokeji looped a header home in the final ten minutes to give him some consolation for his efforts but by this point the result had been well and truly settled.
Thr article at the bottom of the page was about our groundsharers Fisher. And they comments on the uncertain future of our stadium too:
Learn our lessons say Hamlet tenants
The club who ground-share with Dulwich Hamlet have advised their neighbours to get guarantees on the future of Champion Hill so they don't find themselves homeless.
Kent Hurlimann Premier Division side Fisher FC have been tenants at the East Dulwich ground since 2009, when they reformed as a supporters run outfit, having learnt the hard way that promises over ground redevelopments often don't pan out as hoped.
The previous incarnation of Fisher FC, Fisher Athletic, left Surrey Docks Stadium in 2004 intending to return once the Salter Road site had been redeveloped.
But the Rotherhithe stadium is still derelict, soon to be sold to an unknown developer, and Fisher had to reform just over three years ago when the previous club was wound up in High Court.
Current Club Secretary Dan York told the News: " We have been through the mill in having our ground taken from us. We support Dulwich and Dulwich fans in doing what they can do to protect their future by getting a ground in Dulwich, whatever it looks like. They should not take any risks and the club and the fans need to secure something that is in the best interest of Dulwich Hamlet Football Club."
And so to this morning's copy of the weekend edition of the 'South London Press', which also led on the ground:
Dulwich chief: Champion Hill lease set to be extended
SAFE AS HOUSES
Dulwich Hamlet's place at Champion Hill stadium is almost certain to be safe for the forseeable future. The company that previously leased the stadium, DHPD, went int administration in May 2012 and there had been some uncertainty over the future of the ground. But members of the board confirmed in a meeting after Saturday's 4-1 win over Merstham that the owners of the ground's freehold are in talks with Hamlet to extend the lease beyond the current expiry date in 2015. More than 80 fans attended the meeting.
Chief executive Martin Eede said an extension was extremely likely. "It was just a question of keeping fans in the loop because they are very important to the club and we want everything to be transparent," Eede said. "Everything is fine and the extension will happen. It's up to the owners now to decide the terms of the lease."
Manager Gavin Rose said the news was great for the stability of the South Londoners. "It is great for the fans to be assured about the future of the club," he said. "As a team we can only affect what happens on the pitch but having stability in the background is reassuring."
Second-placed Hamlet's Ryman League Division One south fixture at home to bottom club Three Bridges tomorrow looks a formality on paper. However, they took a point away from Leatherhead, now in fourth, last Saturday, so Rose expects them to be tough opposition who are high in confidence. "That result may have changed people's perspective of them, Rose said. "They will not be pushovers and most teams are difficult to play against at this time of year because they are fighting for something-in Three Bridges' case, survival. "We were losing aginst them until late on earlier this season before we managed to get a win, so we will have to be motivated and work hard. We expect them to make themselves hard to break down and try to hit us on the break." Rose also confirmed that forward Frankie Sawyer has gone on loan to Kent Hurlimann League side VCD Athletic for a month in a bit to boost his match fitness. He scored twice for them in his first game last Saturday. "He needs to get more match practice before coming back to fight for a place," Rose said. "He was out for three months, which can take its toll, and when he came back we had a lot of games postponed so he wasn't able to come in and get match practice for us. We have a lot of games in the next month but because of his fitness he wouldn't have been much use or been able to produce something for the team. Hopefully when he comes back his fitness will be where we expect it to be. I am still confident the team will handle the schedule we have coming up. Our priority is the league so we will probably use some youth team players in the two semi-finals we are in." Josh Turner is nearing fitness after picking up an injury against Wealdstone in January.
