Dulwich Hamlet are very fortunate that William Tenison Lloyd and Sarah Elizabeth Lloyd moved their family to 151 Croxted Road, from Kensington in the 1880’s. Among their five children were William Tenison Lloyd Junior, baptized in 1871 and Hugh Corrie Lloyd, born in 1876.

It appears William was a founder member, but Hugh (pictured) joined when the club went open. This changed the history of the club. In the words of our 75th anniversary booklet, the brothers “taught us how to play.”

So significant was their input, it is believed we changed our club colours (red and blue) and kit (white with dark knickers) in their honour. William attended Westminster School, which uses pink, Hugh attended Dulwich College, which uses blue, from 1888 until 1894. Hugh was two years below Sir Ernest Shackleton at the College and made the College’s third team at both cricket and rugby union. We are perhaps fortunate the College didn’t play football.

The Lloyd family were living in Beckenham come the 1901 census. William seemingly didn’t stay at Hamlet long; he became a silk trader and may have spent time in China. Hugh stayed with Hamlet into the early part of the 20th Century.

William died in Bromley in 1927, his father died a week later. Hugh, who worked for an accountancy firm, lived until 1955. In 1910 he married Mary Lillian Wolley daughter of Rev. Canon Henry Francklyn Woolley, vicar at St Mary’s, Shortland. Mary survived him.

The Lloyd brothers’ names are little known amongst current supporters, every time we run out in pink and blue the club pays homage to two of the most important players in our history.

Honours: William represented the Isthmian League Reserves Section.
