A day out from the office...
It will soon be Saturday, it will soon be FA Cup day...it must be away to Slough Town!
Slough has a bit of a reputation…and a bit of a bad one to say the least!
You can blame John Betjeman for that...
Come, friendly bombs and fall on SloughIt isn't fit for humans now
There isn't grass to graze a cow.
Swarm over, death!
Veteran rant poet Attila the Stockbroker defending the place with this version...I know which one I prefer, and yes it's the latter one!
But I-for one-am really excited about tomorrow, for it’s a rare chance to see The Hamlet at a new ground.
Slough Town were regular sparring partners of The Hamlet in the last few decades of the Twentieth Century, before they went onwards and upwards into the Conference, before losing their Wexham Park Stadium, leading a somewhat nomadic existence, before finally returning to their home town last season.
They have helpfully provided this guide for our visiting fans & it’s an easy place to get to.
The full address of the ground is: Arbour Park, Stoke Road, Slough, Berkshire, SL2 5AY; with tyhe postcode in BOLD for anyone using their SatNav.
Trains are plentiful from London Paddington, no matter what time you go you won't have long to wait, with the faster trains taking less than half an hour.
When you come out of Slough station it's an easy fifteen minute stroll to the ground. Leave the station by the main entrance and turn right. The main road is Stoke Road, turn right and walk along it until you reach the ground. You can't get easier than that.
Despite the awful press the town gets, and make no mistake it's not the sort of town you'd go on holiday, but it's ok to wander round for an away game. There's the Slough Museum in the town centre, but if you want to find out more about the history of the place before you go THIS WEBSITE should have plenty for you to peruse.
And there's also a few suggestions on the good side of Slough HERE.
In recent years Slough has been famous as the home of 'The Office', but it's famous for other stuff too...if only you did your research. how many of you know that the iconic sixties television programme Thunderbirds was made in Slough?
And if you think you sometimes get lost in the aisles when you shop in Sainsbury's next to our ground...well, apparently the gigantic Tesco Extra in Slough is one of the biggest in Europe!
Drink-wise, I know very little about this town, but Wetherspoons wise there is the
'Moon and Spoon'.
If you're in no rush to get home sadly the local ice hockey team aren't at home, so if you want to have your hockey fix this weekend it's Streatham High Road for you on Sunday evening, when the Redhawks have a 6.45pm fac-off against Cardiff Fire; which you should be able to double up nicely with our Sierra Leone charity match at Champion Hill.
For this weekend, I might usually suggest going to Windsor, from where you can a train back to the ground, for your sightseeing [humble apologies to Slough Townians!] butthis weekend I would actually say stay in London for the morning and our great city is your oyster, especially if you have an Oyster Card, as it's Open House weekend. There's so much weird and wonderful places to visit, there's bound to be something for everyone. Paddington is situated in the Borough of Westminster, if you want to check out anything near there before you get the train...and finally, before I complete this piece don't forget to sake a selfie with this little man on Paddington Station!
