Charity game in local press
The ‘Southwark News’ featured our Homelessness Awareness game, on Wednesday 1st March, in their paper today.
Unfortunately, there were one or two discrepancies, but all in all good advance publicity for the game, which is on Wednesday 1st March, kick off at 7.45p.
Admission is only £5 for adults & £2 concessions. ALL children under the age of 13 FREE.
The match has been organised by George Parnavelas, from the Dulwich Hamlet Football Committee. He approached Centrepoint & the Street Football Association, not the other way round. It is part of our on-going mid-season annual game to raise awareness on a social issue, that affects both our fans & our wider local community
And it’s also not a full Hamlet First Team XI, but a side consisting in the main of our up and coming youngster, as to field our Strongest side would be unfair on the opposition.
Here’s what the paper had to say:
Hamlet first to host celebrity football match for homelessDulwich Hamlet FC have been selected as the first club in the country to host a Centrepoint celebrity football match.
The Champion Hill first 15 will be going head-to-head on March 1 with famous names including rapper Wretch 32, ex-footballers Jason Lee and Perry Groves and comedian Rob Beckett.
Ex-clients of the Street Football Association (SFA) programme, who are organising the fundraiser match and are a part of Centrepoint, will also joining the team in their face-off against Dulwich.
For Gareth Parker, Chair of the SFA and Head of Centrepoint Sport, Dulwich Hamlet was a natural choice of club. “Dulwich are the ideal club. They are the epitome of a community club. They’re very important, in the way that they’re so progressive and want to affect positive change,” he said.
As well as raising cash for the charity, Gareth hopes that the match will help people see homelessness differently. “It’s not about feeling sorry for people. It’s about looking at their stories and feeling inspired by them,” he said.
The SFA was set up six years ago by Gareth, with the aim of using football as a tool to engage homeless people, building their self-esteem and support them into employment and training.
On the scheme, participants train as part of professional football clubs, including Arsenal, Manchester United and Everton.
Dulwich Hamlet Football Committee member, Mishi Morath, said: “I’m looking forward to it immensely. Everyone can have fun on the night but support a serious cause at the same time.”
