Chatting with Gavin
We caught up with Gavin Rose, just before the First Team training session last night. Here's what he had to say...
That was superb performance against Lewes at the weekend, yet our line-up keeps on changing. How much will the Hemel Hempstead spies have learned before Saturday?
"Probably a fair bit. But line-ups change, and we try to play the same and I believe in the way we play at Dulwich. It's been successful over the last eighteen months or more, if teams learn about the way we play we can always play a different way."
It's a very big game in the FA Cup, people are saying it will be tough. Presumably we have had them watched, and anyway, they will be saying we be tough too?
" I'm sure it will be a hard game, it would be silly to say it won't be anything but competitive. But equally, we are right at the top of our league. It would be silly to think it will be easy for either side, I am expecting a very competitive match."
When it comes to the squad what's the latest for injuries?
" Ellis Green is out with a hamstring, I'm not sure for how long. Mathieu Boyer was hoping to be training, after getting injured at Bury Town. and Lewis Gonsalves is back in contention after he hurt his head in the same game. Apart from Ellis we are nearly back to full strength, regarding short term injuries. Marcel Henry-Francis is also training tonight."
A question a number of fans ask about FA Cup games, especially as we are allowed seven substitutes, is why we don't use the luxury of a second keeper on the bench?
"Well I could do, but I tend not to with five subs either. To be honest I pick Phil Wilson, and I'll stick with him. Obviously there are some pro's of a sub keeper, but the need for one is far and few betweeen, if something happens in a game I will deal with it then, but at the moment it's not for me. But my view may change in the future, who knows?"
And talking of players, whatever happened to Luke Hickie, who we haven't seen this season?
"Luke went away mid pre-season for a family holiday, and was behind with his fitness when he returned. It was, basically, hard for him to keep up. I had been hoping to reward him, as he was paid peanuts last season, and wasn't playing for the money, but he would't have been starting games, and we felt it best he either goes elsewhere, or simply works hard on regaining his fitness. The door's open to him and he left on good terms."
Back to the Cup. Our away support has been very good this season. How much of a help can the fans be o Saturday?
" Oh a great help. It's obvious, especially at tough away games, when the tide might turn against us, that the supporters constantly cheering us on helps us. At away games it can feel like we are actually at home as it's so loud, and that helps, as it doesn't feel like an away match."
There's also a possible London Senior Cup tie on Monday, against Hendon. How high up on your priorities is that game?
"Obviously we may have an FA Cup replay on Tuesday, so there won't be too much emphasis on that game, until the coach journey home, when we can plan for whoever we play. To be fair, with regard to the London Cup match, we have some really hungry boys on the bench and in the Reserves knocking at the door, so whoever we play we will still have a strong side out, wanting to win."
And, finally, a good comeback for the Youth Team on Tuesday against the Met. Police, in the FA Youth Cup, after we were two down. Now just Canvey Island stands between a place in the First Round Proper. How are this years crop shaping up?
" Yes, the boys are doing alright. Every year they gradually get better as individuals and as a group and this year is no different. Last year we lost at the same round we are at now, and could have done a bit better. I watched Canvey last night who looked decent, and we will have to put in a good performance if we are to progress to the next round."
