Gavin talks to the official website
We caught up with First team Manager Gavin Rose to catch up on his latest thoughts...
Starting with the Enfield Town game, the red card on Saturday made it difficult even though we got all three points, and could cause problems with a build-up of injuries and suspensions. Have we got any wingers left?
"Erm, obviously injuries and suspensions have killed us a little, but Nyren Clunis will be fit for Tuesday or Saturday, he just recovering from a dead leg, Ellis Green is back in training this week and Jerome Walker had a family problem, on Saturday, so had to turn round. We still have young Abdul Mansaray as well."
Was their a sense of déjà vu after we lost the lead in Saturday, following the Bognor match?
"Not really, they were poor goals to lose, I certainly don’t want it be a regular thing for us to be down to ten men, but that shouldn’t excuse from defending poorly as individuals. I expect the team to be at full strength, which makes it harder to get through our defence. I expect us to work hard, and not make it a habit of going down to ten men. The boys have been warned about the discipline and red cards, which is not acceptable."
Away to Cray Wanderers tonight. Will we be continuing to do ‘an Arsenal’ and field the youngsters?
"It’s not quite like that. The squad we’ve got, if they’re not playing, feel they should be playing, it’s good competition. The team I put out, will be a good one. It’s a better way for them to compete for places, and not a slight on the competition. It’s a chance for a few who might not feature normally to show what they can do, and they have done well so far."
Talking of youngsters, we lost at Brentford last Wednesday but weren’t outclassed by them. What was your view of the game?
"The boys were a little bit nervous in the opening stages but settled, acquitting themselves well against players who train five or six days a week. It was a highly intensive game, but you can’t really judge a player properly until he’s 21 or 22 anyway. At this stage of their careers it’s not the end of the world to lose an FA Youth Cup game."
Away from football we had a great night on Friday, at the Quiz night for Harry Ottaway’s benefit. It included a substantial donation from the First team squad, may I thank you for that?
"It just shows how the Football Club has grown over the last couple of years. Harry really appreciated everyone’s support, and the players appreciate what has been done, if the same situation happens to them. It sends a really strong message that we are a Football Club with supporters who care."
Going back to the football, it must have been disappointing to lose to Concord Rangers over two games in the Trophy, when we were clearly the better side.
"The team stepped up against a team from a higher level and I think we definitely shaded the games, without being disrespectful to Concord. It is good to see the level we have reached is good, but we have to maintain it week in, week out. We have to go through that and further for a while. Now it’s more important to focus on the League."
And finally, Xavier Vidal was selected for the FA XI game against the Royal Engineers, as part of the Football Association 15th anniversary celebrations, which was played last night at Maidstone United. A rare honour for him and the Club?
"Yes, I believe it is. He’s only eighteen, so to get to that level is testament to how he’s developing. Paul Fairclough is the manager, and he uses these game to look at the possible next generation for England C international matches, where he can run the rule over the next group of lads to come through."
