It's not the winning, it's the taking part!

It's not the winning, it's the taking part!

Well that's the mantra of the Dulwich Hamlet Supporters Team, who had lots of fun but failed to a win a match, up in Glasgow last weekend.

'The Rabblers', as the team affectionately call themselves, were making their fourth appearance in the annual Queen's Park Supporters Sixes competition, played at the Lesser Hampden ground, in the actual shadow of Hampden Park itself.

There was sadness over the weekend, as prior to the competition commencing all teams formed a huge circle to hold a one minute silence ofr the young Queen's Park goalkeeper Martin Kelly, who died suddenly in london, two weeks previous before the Leyton Orient supporters competition. His funeral had been held just days before, on the Wednesday morning.

Competing in the Veterans tournament, which is supposed to be for those Over 35, The Hamlet boys were hampered somewhat, by appearing to be one of the few sides not to have an under age player or two.

Turning out in our Pink & blue stripes, sponsored by Skyline Solar, were Amin Haque, in goal; Steve Rickerby; Lester Ford; Shaun Dooley; Steve Bennett; Phil Baker; Mark Hutton; Mick O'Shaughnessy & 'guesting' was our good friend from north of the border, St. Johnstone fan Dave Robb.

Despite our best endeavours we finished bottom of our group, losing every game, without managing to hit the back of the net, in a section that was undoubtedly the strongest of the Vets pairings, to be fair.

Our opener was against Partick Thistle, where we suffered a three goal reverse. Next up were St. Mirren, which was our closest game, only going down by a lone goal.

Then came defeat against Scotspurs, a north of the border tottenham Hotspur fans group. This was followed by a lost to our hosts from Queen's Park, Classic QP. Coming second best meant we handed back the Edgar Kail Trophy to them, which we have held since 2010, a cup which we play for whenever we come up against them, whether eleven-a-side, or in tournaments.

Our last match, with a place in the Plate, for teams already not making it through to the knock-out stages assured, was another Scottish side, MacDonald Rovers.

And so to what proved to be our last match of the competition, in the Plate. We were pitted against WellPosh, which is a mix of Motherwell fans & Peterborough United supporters, a friendship forged over many years of taking part in this tournament at Queen's Park. We finally found the back of the net, with STEVE BENNETT giving The Hamlet the lead, but sadly it was short lived, and we retired to the bar, afer going down by the odd goal in three.

Despite the scorelines going against us in all of our matches, it was a great trip, and it strengthened our friendships north of the border, not just with Queen's Park, but many other sides, as we spread the word of Dulwich Hamlet once more.

Roll on our next trip up to Glasgow in 2014!
