Last week's papers
Once more we keep track of the local press, for the benefit of our fans who don't see them in print..
...apologies for the delay in sharing them, understandably our official Club website volunteers have been very busy with what spare time they have had, helping the Dulwich Hamlet Supporters Trust with their Calais Humanitarian efforts, as everyone mucked in together..
First up is the match report from the 'Non League Paper' Sunday week ago, after we beat Billericay Town:
A glorious late goal from Rhys Murrell-Williamson gave Dulwich a dramatic victory against a Billericay side who were unlucky not to take at least a point.
Hamlet's success was due to solid defending and crucial saves from keeper Phil Wilson. Ricay's Shane Cojocarel squandered an early chance, whilst keeper Jack Giddens saved well from Hamlet's Nyren Clunis and Charlie Penny.
Onome Sodje beat Wilson in the 18th minute and Billericay calimed a penalty when Matt Drage cleared off the line, but the referee waved play on.
Giddens then held Jacob Erskine's close range effort and denied Ashley Carew with his feet.
After the break, the best chances fell to Billericay's former Hamlet striker Tom Derry.
In the 67th minute, Derry got clear but the advancing Wilson saved. Then he met Ola Williams' right-wing cross but Wilson pulled off a world-class save to turn the ball over the bar.
It was not Derry's day and six minutes from time he had a header kicked off the line by Kevin James.
But in the second minute of stoppage time sub Murrell-Williamson cut inside and struck a marvellous left-foot shot into the far top corner.
STAR MAN: Phil Wilson (Dulwich Hamlet)
ENTERTAINMENT: Three stars (out of five)
Last Tuesday's midweek edition of the 'South London Press' carried more non-league news than usual, due to it being a blank weekend at the top of the professional game, and thus more space to fill. The Albert Jarrett freak injury made the back page:
JAW BREAK RULES OUT WIDEMANDulwich Hamlet winger Albert Jarrett broke his jaw in two places after a freak injury on Saturday.
The 30-year-old winger slipped over in the tunnel after having a pre-match fitness test before the 1-0 win over Billericay Town on Saturday. Hamlet put a statement on their website: "Fortunately former Hamlet physio Laura McPherson was at the ground visiting, and she went to Kings College Hospital, where she spent eight hours with him. All at Dulwich Hamlet football Club thank her for her kindness, and wish Albert himself a speedy, and hopefully not too painful recovery"
The report on the match itself highlighted our laterst signnig, that was, of course, funded by supporters' donations to the "12th Man" appeal:
Rose wants to keep Rhys for longer after late winnerDulwich Hamlet hope to have Rhys Murrell-Williamson on loan for at least a month after the winger made an important impact from the bench on Saturday by coming on to score a stoppage-time winner against Billericay at Champion Hill.
Murrell-Williamson has joined from National League South side Hayes & Yeading, initially for two weeks. He was part of Crystal Palace's academy but has been in non-league football for the past four seasons.
"He can play on the left or right and is pacy," Dulwich boss Gavin Rose said. "We've seen him a couple of times in friendlies-he has always done well against us. We are delighted with the whole squad after Saturday-it was such a relief-but he took his goal well. It's a great start for him but we hope people won't expect the same from him every week."
Murrell-Williamson's arrival also boosts Rose's wide options after the departure of Dean Lodge and a freak injury for Albert Jarrett prior to Saturday's win.
Jarrett was out having a fitness test on his hamstring (which he failed) but lost consciousness on his way back into the dressing room and hit the floor head-first, breaking his jaw in two places. The former pro had an operation yesterday.
"He felt a bit dizzy and fell flat on his face," Rose said. "He landed on his chin, which pushed his cheekbone up. Just that two or three seconds has led to a serious injury. Dean Lodge has had work commitments that has made it difficult for him to play and train. He could have better with his communication when it came to letting us know his availability. If players see one person do that and get away with it, it could lead to more problems. It was best to move him on."
Dulwich's win was their second in a row after three games without a victory.
"We didn't play well in those games but still looked like getting an equaliser, so it was encouraging to see we are still a goal threat when we are not at the races," Rose said. "There is a lot more to come from this squad-they will get better as the season goes on. Our new players are starting to realise Dulwich Hamlet is a bigger club than they thought when they arrived. Despite a few injuries we are battlnig through."
Hamlet host Leatherhead in the league tonight. In addition to Jarrett, Jack Dixon (knee), Osei Sankofa (ankle) and Damien Scannell (hamstring) are also missing.
And so to last Thursday, in the weekly copy of the 'Southwark News'. They also led with Albert's injury:
Jarrett collapse results in double breakHamlet winger Albert Jarrett broke his cheekbone in two places after collapsing prior to Dulwich's game against Bilelricay on Saturday.
The wide man had just undergone a pre-match fitness test when he feinted on the way to the changing room, after exiting the playing area, leaving his face in a mess after hitting the ground head first.
Hamlet manager Gavin Rose explained: "He had a fitness test before the game and that rules him out of the contest. He went back inside and by all accounts he said he was feeling faint. He tried to get to a seat but before he could get there he collapsed and hit the unforgiving ground chin first. He has split open his chin and his cheekbone shifted. It was very bad and he has two fractures in his cheekbone."
Rose told the News that he expects Jarrett to be out for a minimum of three months. The winger was due to face surgery this week as he starts his road to recovery.
The Hamlet boss admitted that the rest of the team were stunned by the incident, that took place just before the 3pm kick off, but the side went on to win the game 1-0 thanks to an injury time goal from debutant Rhys Murrell-Williamson.
The Dulwich boss added: "The boys though he [Jarrett] was messing around at first then they realised it was very serious. You obviously don't need that in the lead up to a game but there is nothing you can do."
With Jarrett now out of action for an extended period Rose may now seek to extend the deal for Murrell-Williamson which is currently a short term loan from Hayes and Yeading.
"We moved Dean Lodge on due to his commitments and we got Rhys in on the short term," Rose said. "With Albert's injury we may need him a bit longer but that is something we need to look at."
There was also a report on the game against Billericay:
Supersub bags debut Hamlet winnerDebutant Rhys Murrell-Williamson stepped off the bench to score a stoppage time winner for Hamlet against Billericay Town on Saturday.
The injury time effort was the only goal in a tight contest that could have gone either way. Ex-Hamlet gaffer Craig Edwards, now in charge at Billericay, had good reason to feel robbed by the goal as his side wasted good chances to bag all three points.
A crowd of more than 1,500 people saw an even contest and celebrated the late winner, although a top drawer save from Hamlet keeper Phil Wilson gave Murrell-Williamson the chance to bag glory with his fine curling effort from the edge of the area.
Dulwich boss Gavin Rose said of his latest acquisition: "He [Murrell-Williamson] has it in him to create or score a goal and that is why we wanted to bring him in."
Rose added: "There were chances at either end and in the second half Billericay had the better chances. But in the first half we had the chances and just did not take them."
Rose may shake up his squad further in the upcoming weeks as he seeks to build on Saturday's win. The Hamlet manager told the News: "We try to be as fair as possible with the players but we also have to be fair to the club as well. If players aren't what we want, or can't do what we want, we will have to move them on. We have one or two other targets who will be good in the long term but we have to be fair to other clubs and do things properly before we can get them in."
On Tuesday night Dulwich took on Leatherhead, again at Champion Hill, and Murrell-Williamson got his name on the scoresheet again, scoring the decisive goal in a 1-0 victory.
And so, to complete the catch-up with the local media from last week, we look at last Friday's weekend edition of the 'South London Press', & it was our new boy grabbing the headlines again:
Rhys can't stop scoringGavin Rose praised the depth of his Dulwich Hamlet squad after seeing his side win their third match in a row.
Albert Jarrett and Kristian Campbell were sidelined going into Tuesday's 1-0 victory over Leatherhead at Champion Hill. Rose also saw Jacob Erskine strain his hamstring early on.
"We're a bit unfortunate with injuries," said the Hamlet boss. "We've got five or six players out in total. With the likes of [Damian] Scannell and [Jack] Dixon fit we'd be very confident of doing well. But behind that we've got players who are showing they're equally as good. I'm delighted with that."
The manager was also delighted with the impact of Rhys Murrell-Williamson, who scored his second goal in as many matches.
The on-loan Hayes & Yeading wideman weaved his way past three defenders before converting his own rebound after his first effort hit the post.
"He's not even fully match fit so I look forward to when he is," said Rose. "He's a direct threat and we've loved players like that at this football club."
Murrell-Williamson was a constant thorn in the opposition side and received a standing ovation from the 625-strong crowd when he was substituted late in the second half.
He said: "It's great to hit the ground running and I look forward to the future with this football club. I've only been here a couple of weeks but I can already feel the confidence among the side. I couldn't have wished for a better start."
Dulwich Hamlet are at Hampton & Richmond Borough tomorrow.
And that concludes the news from a week ago. We hope to share what's being said this week on Friday.
