Loooking back at the printed press

Loooking back at the printed press

Here's the round-up from the newspapers over the last seven days

Before we start, I was asked once more why we reproduce these when there's so much available on the internet.

The answer is quite simple, not everything that is printed goes on to end up on websites, and not all of our fans live in the catchment area of the local newspapers, or might not see a copy of the 'Non League Paper'.

We simply try to do this to provide a service to our fans from outside our corner of South-East London; those who live abroad; or perhaps cannot afford to buy newspapers. And there's also our European and further afield supporters, who don't see these papers, plus any fans who might not be able to get to Champion Hill anymore, due to being housebound to some extent. We like to provide a little service to them all.

Now onto the reporting!

Last Sunday the 'Non League Paper' covered our FA Cup defeat at Slough Town:

COMEBACK COMPLETE BUT HAMLET SEEING RED
Slough Town twice came from behind against Bostik Premier Dulwich Hamlet, who were reduced to ten men in first-half stoppage time.
This tie between two of the strongest sides in their respective divisions was expected by many to be an entertaining contest, and it did not disappoint as the 712 supporters in attendance were treated to a great advert for the famous old competition.
During a tight opening 45 minutes, both sides enjoyed passages of possession, but chances were few and far between.
Dulwich's Nyren Clunis was denied by Jack Turner after a short backpass had put the 'keeper in trouble, and the dangerous Dumebi Dumaka saw a strike held by Turner before he later had a goal disallowed by an offside flag.
Slough also had their moments, but too often their final ball was lacking and as a result, they did not register a shot on target in the first half.
Then, on the stroke of half-time, the game came to life when Sanchez Ming caught Slough winger Matt Lench with a high boot, and referee Stephen Bates decided it warranted a straight red card.
Slough joint manager Neil Baker had sympathy for Dulwich. "I don't think [it was a red card] personally. It's a topical issue at the moment, and that's the reason he's been sent off."
Slough's fortunes turned as quickly as the weather at Arbour Park as heavy rain started to fall.
The second half was less than a minute old when Turner kept out Clunis' strike, but the resulting corner was headed firmly past him by Mark Weatherstone to give Dulwich the lead.
Slough responded strongly and, after forcing a series of corners, Brad Wadkins diverted a shot past Preston Edwards to equalise.
The home side looked the more likely to score next, and made changes as they looked to win the game, but they shot themselves in the foot after failing to clear the ball led to Clunis firing the ball into the bottom corner on 75 minutes.
Kust three minutes later, Slough were level again through the all-action Lee togwell, who finished neatly from James Dobson's cross.
And six minutes from time, Dulwich's resistance was broken as Manny Williams touched Chris Flood's cross past Edwards to turn the game on its head.
"We've shown brilliant character to come back twice and then go and win it", said Baker.
STAR MAN: Lee Togwell (Slough)
ATT: 712
ENTERTAINMENT: ***** (maximum five out of a possible five)

On Tuesday the midweek edition of the 'South London Press' mentioned the last two local clubs to exit the qualifiers:

Duo both make FA Cup exits

Dulwich Hamlet and Tooting & Mitcham both made exits from the FA Cup on Saturday.
An 84-th minute goal from Manny Williams earned Slough town a 3-2 win at Arbour Park. Dulwich led twice in the tie despite being down to ten men after Sanchez Ming's dismissal.
Mark Weatherstone headed home Ashley Carew's corner a minute after the restart, with Brad Watkins levelling soon after. Carew claimed another assist with a ball over the top for Nyren Clunis to fire past the slough keeper with 15 minutes remaining.
But the lead wasshort-lived again as Lee Togwell struck.
Nathan Ferguson lost possession and it was punished as Williams bagged the winner.

Onto Thursday, and -it must be said- the somewhat bizarre report in the 'Southwark News'. It started off with the headlines about our Velocity trophy match, but then went on to report on the Slough Town defeat as if it was a Bostik League clash, rather than an FA Cup tie!

Spot-kick hero 'keeper Edwards sends Hamlet through

Goalkeeper Preston Edwards was the hero as Dulwich Hamlet made it through to the second round of the Isthmian League Velocity trophy after a dramatic penalty-shootout win over Staines Town on Tuesday night.
Edwards saved two spot-kicks after the tie had finished 1-1 to send his side into the next stage 4-2 on penalties.
Jonathan Hippolyte had given Staines the lead in the 20th minutes, before with just 21 minutes left Hamlet's Ashley Carew equalised with a superb drive from outside the box.
Carew scored from the spot in the shootout, but Kenny Beaney missed to keep the pressure on his side.
Muhammadu Faal and Nathan Ferguson were successful from twelve yards, and Edwards' double success set up Sanchez Ming, who coolly slotted home the decisive kick.
At the weekend, Ming was sent off just before half-time as his side twice took the lead at Slough before going down to a 3-2 league defeat.
Marc Weatherstone nodded Gavin Rose's side in front but Slough levelled through Brad Watkins after Edwards had made a number of impressive saves.
Edwards saved brilliantly again from Lee Togwell in the 66th minute, and with fifteen minutes left ten-man Hamlet went in front when Nyren Clunis finished after being released by Carew.
Three minutes later, however, the home side levelled, with Togwell getting his second.
It seemed like Dulwich would hold on for a good point in the circumstances, but Manny Williams pounced late to leave the visitors empty-handed.
The result leaves Hamlet tenth in the table.

And, finally, to the weekend edition of the 'South London Press', which hit the shops on Friday morning. It was all about Ash Carew:

Dulwich star told to carry on shooting

Dulwich Hamlet manager Gavin Rose is urging Ashley Carew to carry on shooting after his wonder strike in the midweek win over Staines Town in the Velocity Cup.
The playmaker produced a superb finish in the 69th minute to cancel out Jonathan Hippolyte's first-half opener at Wheatsheaf Park.
Dulwich went on to win 4-2 in a penalty shootout.
When asked if Carew had already settled the club's goal of the season competition, Rose replied: "Probably. We're trying to get Ash to shoot more. With all the ability he has got, sometimes he is a little shy to pull the trigger. We know he is capable of doing that, he has done it many times since he has been with us at Dulwich. We encourage him to get shots off a little more around the edge of the box."
Preston Edwards made two saves in the spot-kick showdown with Carew, Muhammadu Faal, Nathan Ferguson and Sanchez Ming all converting.
"We always want to stay in any competition," said Rose. "It gives us an opportunity to give minutes to players who have not played week in, week out, to keep them fit. Last season we got to the semis and as you get to the latter stages it probably becomes a bit more serious."
Dulwich-10th in the Bostik League Premier division-are at home to Leatherhead tomorrow.
Defender Anthony Acheampong and Nathan Green are still about a month away from being fit again with influential striker Gavin Tomlin estimated to be another ten weeks off making a return to first-team contention.
