Metropolitan Police 0-0 Dulwich Hamlet
Dulwich will be disappointed that they couldn't find the finishing to reward their dominance.
This was a game that The Hamlet dominated for long periods and in which they spurned a number of chances to win the game, especially late on.
From the start Dulwich kept their opponents at arms length and Phil Wilson was not called into serious action in the first half. Ethan Pinnock and Lewis Gonsalves formed a new central defensive partnership and dealt comfortable with everything that the Police could muster.
Kevin James and Billy Crook were in charge of midfield and provided the platform for Dulwich to get the ball wide at regular intervals. However, other than a few crosses, a couple of Harry Ottaway headers and a free kick from Erhun Oztumer that was comfortably saved, there was a lack of clear chances.
The second half opened more evenly but Dulwich should have taken the lead when Dean Lodge was set free inside the box but rushed his shot and sliced wide after good interplay between him and Harry Ottaway.
The Met were seeing more of the ball around the Dulwich box but Phil Wilson was well protected by his defence and not called upon to make a save. However, he would eventually be called into action as a long ball over the top sent a forward clear but Wilson was able to get a hand to the ball as the forward tried to round him and the retreating defence snuffed out any threat.
Further good play saw Erhun bundled over as he looked to be clear but the referee declined to point to the spot. A Kevin James free kick was just over whilst Nyren Clunis, having come on as substitute, could not find the necessary finish when presented with two good late chances which probably highlighted his lack of match sharpness having missed much of pre-season.
Overall, this was a good performance against a side expected to be in the higher reaches of the table and 7 points from 9 is a start that everybody would have been happy to achieve when the fixtures were first released back in July.
