Nostalgia Aplenty on Nyren's Big Day
King of Camberwell's overdue testimonial was a trip down memory lane for those at Champion Hill, with the 2013 side beating their 2018 opponents.
Three years after the original date was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Nyren Clunis was finally able to walk out at Champion Hill in his testimonial to recognise his service to the club.
With 486 games, 117 goals and two promotions in his 11 years at the Hamlet, Nyren is deservedly classed as a modern club legend, and his special day brought together the two greatest sides he was part of, the 2013 Isthmian South title winners, and the 2018 Isthmian Premier promotion winners.
Nyren played the first half on the 2013 side, donning the number 7 shirt which he wore so often at Champion Hill, but it was the 2018 class who took a second minute lead, with current Hamlet player Sanchez Ming picking up the ball inside the centre circle, and proceeded to lob Phil Wilson for a stunning opener.
That sparked a pacy start from the 2018 side, with Nathan Green marauding down the flank to link up with Dumebi Dumaka, who laid off for Reise Allassani to curl wide. However, the title winners of 2013 soon carved out an opening of their own, Frankie Swayer cutting a ball back to Turkish magician Erhun Öztümer, but he could only find the leg of Preston Edwards with his shot from close range.
Wilson denied Allassani at the other end, before he was forced off in the 16th minute, big Phil landing awkwardly after jumping with Dumaka for a ball, with scans later revealing some broken ribs. Anthony Cook, scheduled to play for the 2018 side, donned the goalkeeping jersey for the rest of the game, amazingly the second time he had appeared in goal for the club.
The 2013 side were now finding their rhythm and swagger, and Öztümer saw another effort rebound to safety off the post, before Ahmed Deen, not renowned for his goalscoring form from left-back, fired another shot wide of the near post. It was no surprise then when the equaliser came in the 25th minute, with Nyren reaching the byline before cutting a ball back to Daniel Carr, with the former Trinidad & Tobago international using some quick feet to swivel and caress the ball into the far corner.
It continued to be one-way traffic, with Marc Weatherstone blocking a Dean McDonald shot on the goal line, with the follow-up from Sol Pinnock finding the side netting, but McDonald would soon grab his goal ten minutes before the break. Öztümer rolled a pass out to Dean Lodge on the left wing, and as he cut inside, he produced a perfect reverse pass through to McDonald, with the number 10 rounding Edwards and stroke home the second for his side.
Öztümer and Rhys Murrell-Williamson traded chances, before the biggest cheer of the first half erupted around the ground, as Clunis netted a third for the 2013 side. It was vintage Nyren too, as he raced onto a through ball from Lodge before finishing low across Edwards into the far corner, a goal that was very well-received by his teammates and adoring public.
The break saw Nyren swap sides, and he was soon in the chances once more, but found his Cray Wanderers teammate Cook somewhat difficult to beat, with the stand-in keeper first denying him with his legs, before he tipped a rising shot away for a corner. He would however, be beaten in the 57th minute, as Kenny Beaney led a charge downfield for the 2018 team, before he linked up with Dumaka, and the striker brushed off Peter Adeniyi to place a shot into the far corner and reduce the deficit.
There were memorable moments for two Hamlet fans, Chris Heaney and Patrick Ludden, who had won places in the team in an auction, as they took to the field, the former joining the 2013 side and latter on the 2018 team. Ludden would see his side go close again, Cook getting down low to his right to thwart Weatherstone, before springing to the same side to keep out Anthony Acheampong.
The game stopped in the 77th minute in a pre-planned gesture to Nyren, as he departed the Champion Hill pitch in a Hamlet shirt one final time, with both squads lining up to give him a guard of honour and some enthusiastic slaps on the back, with plenty of claps and cheers from the fans around Champion Hill too.
The 2013 team sealed the bragging rights four minutes from time, as Carr charged down a Weatherstone pass to burst through on goal, and with Edwards sprinting out to close him down, he unselfishly squared to Heaney on his right to put the ball into an empty net, with Heaney mobbed by all his teammates in a moment he will surely never forget.
Sawyer had a late effort parried away, but that was it for the goalscoring, with all the players remaining on the pitch long after the full-time whistle to chat with fans and officials, and reminisce about their time at the club. A truly fantastic event, one befitting someone who gave so much service to the club during 11 years on the pitch, thank you for all the memories Nyren, we hope you enjoyed your day.
